Officers are fighting drug problem

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
The Drug Task Force, Portland Police Department, Jay County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police, with assistance from Adams County Sheriff’s Office and Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, are in the midst of a drug interdiction operation.
Due to this cooperation between departments, several people have been arrested on drug offenses and homes have been searched. This has created several more investigations.
I urge all drug users to get the help they need and give their loved ones the best Christmas present ever. If you fail to get the help, we will be greeting you soon. Chances are the Drug Task Force already knows your name. Your name has been shared by the task force to all officers in Jay County, the state police, Adams County and Randolph County.
I ask the general public to understand. If an office pulls you over and runs a police K-9 around your vehicle, the police officer is not calling you a drug user, they are doing their job. No police officer enjoys searching vehicles and taking a chance on getting poked by a dirty needle. No police officer enjoys getting yelled at because they took a few minutes from your day. The officers are trying to get drugs off the street because they care about this community. They are trying to protect everyone in it and keep it safe for your children and grandchildren.
If anyone has any questions or information, they can call Portland Police Department at (260) 726-7161.
Thank you.
Nathan Springer
Portland Police Chief
