Hectic tourney days are upon us

It’s that time again — tournament time.
And no tournament season is quite like that of the winter.
Sure, there are busier weeks, like when the track regionals and baseball and softball sectionals coincide in May. But the fall and spring have nothing compared to the tournament marathon that began Saturday with the wrestling sectional at Jay County High School.
That event started a run of busy Saturdays that stretches a month and a half, from the first match on the mat to the last ticks off the basketball clock and the final performances in gymnastics.
For those who prefer to do their sports viewing in the friendly environs of JCHS, no day is bigger than Saturday.
It starts bright and early Saturday morning with the regional wrestling tournament at 8:30 a.m.
Jay County hosts four big wrestling tournaments — the East Central Indiana Classic, Allen County Athletic Conference tournament and sectional are the other three — but this one is the biggest, and the first round is perhaps the most important. Wrestlers who win their opening match earn a top-four finish and a trip to the semi-state.

Both the Patriots and South Adams Starfires have several wrestlers with hopes of not only reaching the semi-state, but also continuing on to the state finals.
The girls swim sectional follows closely after the first whistle blows in the gym as the diving competition is scheduled for 9 a.m. The first eight rounds of dives will take place in the morning, followed by the swimming and diving finals in the afternoon.
Jay County is the favorite to win its first sectional championship, and a group of South Adams tankers, led by senior Cady Farlow, are hoping to join their Patriot counterparts by earning state berths.
After the wrestling tournament ends, crews will quickly clear the mats and clean the gym to allow the boys basketball team to take the court in the evening. JCHS will play host to the Yorktown Tigers and, pending tonight’s result against Blackford, could be looking for their fifth straight victory and fourth season of 15 wins or more in the last five years.
It will be no easy task, as Yorktown (12-4) is in the midst of an eight-game winning streak.
The busy schedule continues with the girls swimming state finals, wrestling semi-state, potential girls basketball sectional championship game and a boys basketball game Feb. 14; and the wrestling state finals, boys swim sectional and a boys basketball game Feb. 21. And the following weeks include the boys swimming state finals and the start of the boys basketball and gymnastics tournaments.
For diehard prep sports fans, Saturdays are booked through mid-March. And for athletes, hopefully those busy days will include plenty of team trophies and state medals.
