Suspect remains in Jay jail
Police have until about 2 p.m. today to file charges
As of 10 p.m. Friday, charges had not been filed in the shooting Thursday in Hartford City that left a father and daughter dead.
Charles “Maddog” Whittington was still being held as a suspect in Jay County Jail, and Hartford City Police were at the facility Friday evening. Whittington, 59, was detained by Portland Police Department on Thursday.
The Commercial Review first confirmed the suspect’s name late Thursday afternoon.
Hartford City Police Department on Friday afternoon identified the male victim as Shane Williamson, 40. Other sources identified the female victim as his daughter, 14-year-old Katelin Williamson, a Blackford High School freshman.
Whittington and Shane Williamson had a common female acquaintance, sources said.
Hartford City Police questioned Whittington on Thursday evening and were at Jay County Jail again Friday. Police have 48 hours to file charges before a suspect must be released.
The victims were pronounced dead Thursday morning at the scene of the shooting at Hartford Square Apartments, 202 E. Chestnut St., Hartford City.
According to an HCPD press release, officers were called to that location at 9:13 a.m. Thursday and found Shane Williamson in the parking lot with a gunshot wound to the head. Katelin Williamson was then found in an apartment, also with a gunshot wound to the head.
An autopsy was scheduled for today.
Portland Police Department was contacted by Hartford City Police about Whittington’s possible involvement, and officers then waited for him at his 839 Boundary Pike, Portland, home. Portland officers took him into custody without incident, and he was booked into Jay County Jail at 1:41 p.m. Thursday.
