Government is taking away vote
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Wake up Hoosiers.
Your rights are slowly being eroded by our governor and state legislators.
As I recall, we voted Glenda Ritz to be the state superintendent of schools. Now the state officials want to change your vote.
They are still in shock because Tony Bennett, the white knight of education, was defeated by a Democrat who happens to be a woman.
If the state can nullify your vote, look out. In the future they may be appointing our school board.
Can’t happen here, you say — get out your history book. If I recall correctly, most dictatorships started with the school systems. Hitler and Stalin took out everyone who did not agree with policy.
All of us want the best for our children.
However, they are being tested to the limit. Teachers now teach to the test to please state and federal laws. Also, teachers are so busy with unnecessary forms they no longer have time to teach or to really interact and get to know the students.
Have you noticed the number of dedicated teachers resigning? Even college statistics show that enrolling students are shunning the teaching profession. I wonder if it could relate to government interference?
Are you going to let the state take away your vote? Only fools fail to stand up for their rights. Are we the fools?
Thank you Shon Byrum for your letter printed in The Commercial Review on Jan. 31.
