Farlow hopes to earn medal

BERNE — One more chance.
Cady Farlow knows that’s all she has left at the high school level. And she’s looking to make the most of it.
The South Adams High School senior is headed to the IHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving State Finals for the fourth straight year, this time competing in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100 freestyle.
And for the first time in her career Farlow will have some company as Olivia Von Gunten and twins Brette and Ashton Klopp will join her to compete in a couple of relays.
“I can’t even explain how excited I am,” said Farlow. “I think we get to take 10 girls because of alternates. … That’s so exciting.”
Farlow is looking to create some excitement in the 100-yard breaststroke, an event in which she fell just short of earning a state medal last season.
She was seeded fourth after posting a blistering time of 1 minute, 3.99 seconds in the sectional meet, but despite fading by just two hundredths of second in the state preliminaries she ended up ninth. She was 0.27 seconds out of the top eight, and went on to win the consolation heat the next day.
She finished in 1:04.48 to win the sectional title at Jay County, but knows she can go faster and hopes to be in the 1:03s at the state finals.
“I have been killing myself this season, just remembering ninth place,” said Farlow, who also owns the 29th seed in the 100 freestyle. “The goal is now top five. But if I can leave with something around my neck, that will be ideal.”
Although they finished second to Jay County in the 200 medley relay at the sectional meet, the Starfires made the state finals based on their time. Von Gunten, Farlow and the Klopps are the No. 25 seed in that event, about two seconds off the top-16 pace.
The same group had a sectional-winning time of 3:45.74 in the 400 freestyle relay, which puts them in the No. 28 seed.
