Local business quilt squares sought for project

Preparations at the state level have long been underway for Indiana’s bicentennial celebration. Jay County Visitor and Tourism Bureau is seeking to get local businesses involved in the process.
The bureau is sponsoring a community quilt as a legacy project and inviting local businesses to design 10.5-inch squares.
The project is also open to service clubs and other organizations interested in participating.
“Basically I try to work with the community and try to get the community involved in different things,” said executive director Gyneth Augsburger. “And I just thought this would be a good project …”
Companies are being asked to design a square for the quilt that promotes their business, with a logo to be included. Those who need assistance with designing or creating their square can get help from a group of local quilters, whose contact information is available at the bureau’s website at http://www.visitjaycounty.com.
Stickley’s Quilt Shop in Portland will also offer discounted materials to those who are participating in the project.

The original plan called for a quilt of 24 to 30 squares, but Augsburger said if more organizations are interested, multiple quilts will be made to accommodate demand.
Once all of the squares have been turned in, Donna Stickley of Stickley’s Quilt Shop will assemble the quilts.
Stickley, who was raised in Pennsylvania and lived for 25 years in Ohio, said she’s looking forward to being part of the project and learning more about the Hoosier State during the 2016 celebration.
“I worry that it’s not going to meet up to everyone’s expectations,” she said of the responsibility of assembling the quilt. “But this is going to be something that’s going to be displayed, not something that you throw on a bed. It’s a little scary, but at the same time exciting.”
The quilt is scheduled to be completed late this summer and then displayed during the bicentennial year at a variety of sites, including Jay County Historical Museum, Jay County Public Library, John Jay Center and potentially Jay County Courthouse.
Those interested in participating can sign up online at the bureau’s website or contact Augsburger at [email protected] or (260) 726-3366.
