The Starfire girls earned the first individual conference title Friday while a Patriot trio built a double-digit lead in the race for the team crown. Meanwhile, the boys diving competition set the stage for Saturday’s battle.
Korinna Schindler of South Adams High School claimed the Allen County Athletic Conference girls diving championship, falling just short of the 300-point mark with a total of 299.7.
“I think that she definitely went out and did the best she could do,” said SAHS diving coach Taylor Turner. “It’s a good warm-up for sectional. I was proud of her tonight.”
Bluffton’s Ethan Kitt cruised to the boys title with 373.5 points, with Christian Phillips of Jay County trailing in second place. JCHS coach Barry Weaver noted that his team has been chasing the Tigers, who topped the Patriots in a dual meet and at the Norwell Invitational, all season and looks forward to the challenge again in the conference meet.
While Schindler took the win, JCHS had three of the top eight divers in the girls competition to give the team a 12-point lead heading into the swimming events that begin at 10 a.m. today.
Heather Stinson of the Patriots had a slight advantage after five and eight dives, carrying a lead of 6.55 points into the finals.
But some confusion about her dive list led to a failed dive that bumped her back to fourth place with 276.8 points.
Samantha Link followed in fifth with 244.65, and Mackenzie Knisely placed eighth with 199.1.
“We’ve just about got it all together,” said JCHS coach Matt Slavik. “We had one failed dive that cost her first place, but if she dives like she was tonight she will be advancing to regional …
“Samantha is coming along really nicely, and with Mackenzie Knisely stepping up … having three divers puts us in a good position.”
Schindler was second to Stinson at both breaks in the competition in a close race that also included Marissa Tupai of Adams Central and BreAnna Kizer of Bluffton. She was especially strong with her inward dive in the pike position and took advantage of the opening in the final three dives to win by 11.5 points over Tupai.
“It’s just how tight she is,” said Turner of the inward dive, “and she is just very particular with every detail of the dive.”
Kitt was in control throughout the night for Bluffton, leading by 26 points after the first round of diving. He finished more than 65 points ahead of Phillips, who was the runner up with 306.
“I thought he did a nice job,” said Weaver, noting that the score was a career-best for 11 dives by 35 points. “He’s been trying to obviously work on the consistency plus get a little more (degree of difficulty), and he’s getting there.”
