Thanks for a fulfilling challenge

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
Jay County Public Library has always had a slate of activities to offer the community each summer.
This year we decided to try something a little different. In an attempt to grow our summer offerings with an eye toward appealing to all ages and interests, we reformatted our standard summer reading program into the Summer Challenge.
I am proud to report that JCPL experienced a great success in our first go-round with our Summer Challenge. We had over 400 people (of all ages) work toward meeting the challenge of earning 100 points based on a variety of activities. The points were then redeemed for raffle tickets for many different prizes. Nearly 250 people met the challenge this summer.
I felt that a community-wide goal of some sort would add a nice dimension to the Summer Challenge. We decided to set the community goal for our participants to earn a collective 20,000 points. Our participants managed to earn over 43,000 points. As a result of this success, MainSource Bank agreed to donate $250 to Helping Hand Food Pantry.
A very rewarding part for our staff at JCPL was to see so many people come to the library and so clearly enjoy themselves with the activities, especially families who took the challenge together. We experienced good attendance at the weekly events that we offered and great attendance at some of our larger events, such as a performance by the Minnetrista Center and a superhero traveling museum.
All of this would not have been possible were it not for the many organizations and businesses who generously supported our efforts: First Bank of Berne, MainSource Bank, Evening Optimists, Portland Rotary, Gamma Nu, Tri Kappa, Psi Iota Xi, Delta Theta Tau, Tyson Foods, FCC Indiana, Portland Lions, Portland Kiwanis, Bollenbacher and Associates, Citizens State Bank, Schmit Chiropractic, CrossRoads Financial Federal Credit Union, Marsh supermarket, El Camino, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, Richards Restaurant, Jay County Chamber of Commerce, McDonald’s, Arby’s, KFC/Taco Bell and Subway.
I hope the Summer Challenge will become a summer staple, something that the people of Jay County come to enjoy and look forward to each year. We have already begun the evaluation process in order to make this program even better in future years, and we look forward to all of you accepting our challenge next year.
