Board tables flap gate choice
Portland Board of Public Works opened bids Thursday for both the upcoming flap gate project and the city’s curbside recycling program.
Three bids were placed for the sewer flap gate project, which will involve the installation of 10 new sewer gates around the city to help with flooding issues. The three bids varied greatly, with the highest and lowest more than $55,000 apart.
Two companies also placed bids to take over the city’s curbside recycling service. Board members Bill Gibson, Jerry Leonhard and Mayor Randy Geesaman tabled both matters for review until a meeting at 10 a.m. March 27.
For the flap gate project, Landon Excavating, Portland, placed a bid of $18,600, Culy Contracting, Winchester, submitted a bid of $57,810 and Watson Excavating, Redkey, topped the list at $76,145 bid.
With Portland’s current curbside recycling contract expiring April 1, the board also opened bids from Best Way Disposal and Waste Management. They were based on 24,000 recycling units and varying time spans.
Best Way Disposal, represented at the meeting by Mark Landring, placed one bid with a one-year contract for $4.06 per unit, two years for $4.15 per unit and three years for $4.24.
They placed a second bid offering a two-year contract with the first year requiring payment of $4.11 per unit and $4.24 for the second year, or just a single year for $4.24.
Waste Management, represented by Melinda Antell, offered two bids as well. Based upon weekly pick-ups the first bid called for either a one-year contract at $4.30 per unit, two years for $4.41 or three years for $4.52.
