Comer shines in NAIA tourney

Kegan Comer had been one of the Cougars’ scoring leaders all year. He delivered in the tournament as well.
The 2013 Jay County High School graduate scored in double figures in all three tournament games for the University of St. Francis men’s basketball team, which advanced to the Elite 8 before falling to No. 3 Cornerstone.
Comer had 12 points, including a free throw that gave the Cougars a four-point lead with 14 seconds left, in a 70-68 NAIA Division II tournament-opening win March 12 over St. Francis of Illinois. He added team highs of three steals and three assists while also grabbing two rebounds.
He totaled with 11 points, two assists, two rebounds and a steal in another two-point win — 72-70 — over Morningside in the second round March 13. He finished his season with 13 points and five rebounds March 14 in the 75-64 loss to Cornerstone.
Comer was the team’s leader in both scoring (13.5 points per game) and assists (83). He added 95 rebounds, 38 steals and 13 blocks in 35 games.

Erika Waugh
South Adams – 2011
Closed her career with the Calvin College women’s swim team March 18 through 21 at the NCAA Division III Championships at Conroe ISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas.
Waugh’s best effort came in the 200-yard backstroke as she finished 27th in 2 minutes, 5.62 seconds. She also posted times of 58.71 for 31st in the 100 backstroke and 1:56.82 for 40th in the 200 freestyle.

Eme Miller
Jay County – 2012
Led the Defiance College women’s track team to a third-place finish Saturday at the seven-team Rose-Hulman Early Bird.
Miller won a close three-way race in the 1,500-meter run, taking first place in a time of 5 minutes, 10.63 seconds. She was less than a second in front of Franklin’s Sadie Spears.
She posted a time of 2:36.54 for fourth in the 800 run.

Tyler Back
Jay County – 2013
Hit the national qualifying standard Saturday at the Taylor University Throwing Invite.
Back’s best effort came as he placed second in the shot put. His toss of 43 feet, 6 inches, earned him a spot in the National Christian College Athletic Association national championships.
The sophomore was also fifth in both the discus and hammer throw at 112 feet, 3 inches, and 123 feet, 7½ inches.

Dylan Cope
Jay County – 2013
Ran in two events for the Indiana University East men’s track team, which placed seventh Saturday at the nine-team Pioneer Invitational hosted by Transylvania.
Cope finished sixth in his only individual event, turning in a time of 4 minutes, 19.21 seconds, in the 1,500 run. He joined teammates Clint Swanson, Kyle Hall and Sage Henderson in finishing fourth in the 4x400 relay in 3:34.25.

Collin Affolder
South Adams – 2014
Recorded his first multi-hit outing for the Bethel College baseball team during a 1-0 loss in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday against Spring Arbor.
Affolder legged out an infield single in the second, and smacked a base hit to right field in the fifth inning but was left stranded at second base.
He also notched hits March 12 against Trinity Christian, a 3-1 victory, and in a 2-1 loss March 19 against Spring Arbor.

Hannah Moore
South Adams – 2012
Finished in the top half of the field in the 3,000-meter run Saturday at the Wake Forest Open.
Moore posted a time of 10 minutes, 55.83 seconds, to finish 13th out of 34 competitors in the 3,000 run. She was also 24th in the 5,000 run in 18:31.1.

Drew Houck
Jay County – 2011
Competed for the Indiana University East men’s golf team Saturday and Sunday at the Mount St. Joseph Spring Invite.
Houck opened the tournament at Ashton Oaks Golf Course with a 96 for the Red Wolves, who finished 12th out of 14 teams. He bounced back with a 91 on his second 18 holes to finish 86th overall.

Erin Hunt
Jay County – 2011
Was one of six members of the Bethel College women’s basketball team to be named as Daktronics National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Scholar-Athletes.
Hunt picked up her second such honor, for which athletes must carry at least a 3.5 grade point average. She was also a National Christian College Athletic Association scholar-athlete last season.
