Thank you for generosity
To the editor:
A special thank you goes out to the Dunkirk community for their recent display of unwavering warmth and generosity, from the officers and members of Dunkirk Elks Lodge 1776.
On a recent Saturday evening we held a cancer benefit dance. Early on in the planning stages, we had chosen young Westlawn Elementary School student Josh Johnson as our beneficiary this year. He is a courageous young man fighting a form of leukemia.
Our goal was to raise enough to perhaps buy a gas card or two to assist them in defraying the expense of the constant trips to Riley Children’s Hospital for ongoing treatment. Well, folks came in droves, filled the meeting room, and the generosity was quite simply overwhelming.
With the assistance of State Elks President Dick Dunn, who also attended our event, we were able to present our young man with almost $4,000 after adding what we raised with the benefit to what Dunn raised at the actual event, just by passing the hat, incidentally kicking that off with the first $100 out of his own pocket.
The event far exceeded our expectations, and it makes me proud to call my Dunkirk my hometown. Thanks to all, including the group who came from the Portland Lodge, who made our event such a smashing success.
Sincerely,
James D. Fulks III
