Schwieterman shines for Warriors

Scott Schwieterman is making the most of his opportunities to start for his new team.
The 2013 Jay County High School graduate was in the starting lineup for the third time Wednesday for the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team in a 64-61 loss to the NAIA Division II No. 10 Indiana University East.
Schwieterman had seven points and grabbed six rebounds in 19 minutes. He was 2-of-6 from the field and made three of his four free throw attempts.
Saturday, Schwieterman made his second start of the season and was one of three Warriors to score in double figures and finished second on the team in rebounds in a 67-56 win over Michigan-Dearborn. He scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
He had 14 points and seven boards in his first start, an 88-64 Indiana Tech win Nov. 18 over Marygrove. The Warriors are now 4-3 on the year.

Kegan Comer
Jay County – 2013
Was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line Tuesday on his way to 13 points for the University of Saint Francis men’s basketball team in an 84-79 loss to Huntington University.
Comer shot 50 percent from the field (4-of-8), including 1-for-3 from beyond the ark. He also grabbed four rebounds, had two assists and one steal for the NAIA Division II No. 4 Cougars, who fell to 5-3 (0-1 Crossroads League).

Eric Hemmelgarn
Jay County – 2014
Continues to register tackles for the University of Saint Francis football team.
Playing in his first collegiate playoff game, Hemmelgarn had four tackles, including 1 1/2 in the backfield Saturday, as the NAIA No. 4 Cougars (10-0) defeated No. 12 Reinhardt 37-26 in the opening round of the NAIA Football Championship Series playoffs.
He has played in all 10 games this season and has tallied 27 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss. The Cougars host No. 5 Montana Tech on Saturday in the second round.

Catherine Dunn
Jay County – 2015
Had a career-high nine points Saturday for the Brescia University women’s basketball team in a 70-64 loss to Point Park (Pennsylvania). She was 4-of-9 from the field, including draining her only 3-point attempt, and added six rebounds. She also had a pair of assists.
The freshman added four points and six rebounds Sunday as the Bearcats (2-5, 1-1 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) beat Carlow (Pennsylvania) 85-61. She was 2-of-3 shooting and missed her only free throw. She also tallied three assists and had two steals.

Cady Farlow
South Adams – 2015

Scored 25 points for the Purdue University women’s swim team in its commanding victory in the invitational it hosted Friday through Sunday.
Farlow was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke on Saturday, finishing with a time of 1 minute, 3.04 seconds, to score 13 points. She followed it up with a seventh-place finish Sunday, touching the wall in 2:17.57 for 12 points.
She also swam in the 50 freestyle on Friday. She was 55th in 24.91 seconds.

Jason Pottkotter
Fort Recovery – 2012
Played 10 minutes off the bench for the NAIA Division II No. 17 University of Northwestern Ohio men’s basketball team Saturday in its 71-60 loss to Concordia.
Pottkotter hit both of his free-throw attempts and finished with four points. He also grabbed three rebounds.

Wade Gelhaus
Fort Recovery – 2013
Grabbed three rebounds for the Saginaw Valley State Univeristy men’s basketball team Saturday in its 85-84 loss to Lewis.
Gelhaus also hit one field goal for the Cardinals (1-2) and finished with two points. He added one assist.

Kylie Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2012
Helped the University of Northwestern Ohio women’s basketball team to a 70-66 win Saturday over Concordia.
Kahlig grabbed one defensive rebound in the victory.

Julie Valentine
Jay County – 2013
Earned academic honors at the conclusion of the Stephens College women’s cross country team’s season.
Valentine was one of two Stars to be selected for the Daktronics-NAIA School Athlete Award. In order to be eligible for the award an athlete must maintain a grade point average of at least 3.5 and be a junior or senior.
The junior was also named to the All-American Midwest Conference Academic Team.
