A Jay County man is in custody on charges that he murdered his girlfriend’s daughter.
Dalton R. Davis, 21, 8804 N. 550 West, is being held without bond at Jay County Jail on the murder charge.
Jay County Prosecutor Wes Schemenaur said this morning he plans to file formal charges this afternoon. An initial hearing is likely to be set for Friday.
Davis was arrested and booked into Jay County Jail at 4:33 p.m. Wednesday following the death of 5-week-old Lillian Grace Lloyd early Tuesday morning. He came to the Jay County Sheriff’s Office in Portland voluntarily to be interviewed about the incident, Schemenaur said.
Jay Emergency Medical Service responded to the home Davis shared with his girlfriend and her infant daughter following a 911 call about 11:30 p.m. Monday. The child was not breathing when emergency personnel arrived, and she was transported to Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
The infant was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning at the hospital.
A preliminary report indicates the child died of severe blunt force trauma, but a complete report from an autopsy being conducted at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne is not expected for several weeks.
While he could not comment on the nature of the injuries, Schemenaur said the evidence was clear that the death was not of natural causes. He added that there was no weapon involved.
Davis’ arrest came after an investigation conducted by Jay County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Jay County Prosecutor’s Office and the Department of Child Services.
