Miller blows away record

Eme Miller already owned the Yellowjackets’ record book. All that was left for her to do was improve on her own marks.
Miller, a 2012 Jay County High School graduate, obliterated her own Defiance College 5K record Saturday, placing second at the Jenna Strong Fall Classic hosted by Wilmington College.
Hannah Moore (South Adams – 2012) also competed at the Classic.
Miller ran by far the best race of her career as she posted a time of 18 minutes, 22.4 seconds, for Defiance, which was 30th out of 37 teams. She edged Karen Barrientos of Cuyahoga Community College by two seconds for the runner-up spot, trailing only Claire Wiles (17:58.5).
The senior blew away her previous record time of 18:52 set last season at the Calvin Invitational. She also holds Defiance’s 6K record at 21:34.19.
Moore helped power the Huntington squad to a third-place finish as the Foresters’ No. 3 runner.
She finished in 19:43.3 for 31st overall.

James Keen
Jay County – 2015
Earned a pair of individual victories and helped on another Saturday for the Tiffin University men’s swim team in a 77-63 home loss to Saginaw Valley State University.
Keen won both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events. He finished in 53.43 seconds to win the former, nearly four seconds faster than SVSU’s Nick Berens.
He finished with a time of 2 minutes, 0.73 seconds, to win the 200 backstroke, beating Berens by almost seven seconds.
The freshman swam the backstroke leg of the 400-yard medley relay, joining Petko Toromanov, Kyle Doss and Lucas Merigue Bernardo to win the event. He had a split time of 53.15 seconds.
He also placed third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.72.
The same medley relay team won Oct. 9 against Ashland. Keen won the 100 backstroke (53.87) and was fourth in the 200 IM (2:01.83).

Katy Smeltzer
Jay County – 2015
Made her collegiate debut for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team Oct. 10 in a 174.5-87.5 loss to Carson-Newman.
She swam a leg for the 200-yard medley relay team, which finished fourth. She had a split time of 25.64 seconds, teaming with Christina Clouda, Lauren Leever and Courtney Pethers for a time of 1:58.97.
As an individual, Smeltzer was sixth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.14 seconds. She was also seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:05.6)
The Patriot freshman was second in the 50 freestyle on Saturday, helping UC to a 149-42 victory against Union College. She finished in 26.08 seconds. She added a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:23.11).

Cady Farlow
South Adams – 2015
Swam for the Purdue University women’s swim team as it finished won the Indiana Intercollegiate Invitational it hosted Saturday.
Farlow was second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 4.56 seconds. The freshman was 22 hundredths of a second behind her sophomore teammate, Caroline Weigand.
She also added an 11th-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 25.33 seconds. Classmate Breanna Robinson won in 23.96 seconds.

Kelsey Fiely
Fort Recovery – 2013
Helped lead the Univeristy of Northwestern Ohio volleyball team’s defeanse Saturday in a 24-26, 22-26, 26-22, 26-22, 15-10 comeback victory over Lawrence Tech.
Fiely finished second on the squad with 12 digs. She also had two assists and an aces for the Racers (10-18).
The junior ripped off four aces to go along with four digs in a loss Saturday to Marygrove and had two assists and a dig Wednesday as UNOH fell to Davenport in three games.
