Bins only help if they're used

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
I read the March 29 article about Jay County Solid Waste District considering buying containers to be used at various functions, primarily of the athletic nature, with more than passing interest.
I recall my part-time job with the park department, and our first duty every day was to pick up trash around the three diamonds at “Frakes Park” (Weiler-Wilson Park). I have seen hog farms in Wabash Township that were a credit to that park. The diamonds at Redkey, Dunkirk, Berne and Portland Memorial Park are always cleaner.
Every day was the same, so it seemed. Half-full Coke cups, popcorn boxes, sunflower seed wrappers, McDonald’s and Burger King wrappers, half-eaten hot dogs, towels, jackets, balls, gloves, French fries and pieces of everything the refreshment stand sells were in the aisles, on the seats and strewn everywhere, but precious few were in the 55-gallon drums that were located everywhere for proper disposal. It seems like a flick of the wrist to propel a wrapper, or passing an empty can from hand to hand, was just too much exertion for anyone.
I have suggested to the people in charge that each manager require his team to clean up their dugout and the area around it after each game. Maybe the delay will encourage parents and fans to do their part in making our junior league diamonds a place to be proud of.
The idea of the bins is a good one, but to be useful, people must put them to use.
Respectfully,
Larry Chittum
