Thank you for outstanding drive

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
On behalf of friends and family of the Rachel (Osterholt) Theurer Blood Drive, the words thank you don’t even begin to describe how much we appreciate the overwhelming participation, patience, support and donation of blood to the American Red Cross.
Tuesday was such a special day that we will never forget, just like we will never forget Rachel. The success of this event, with records set, would not be possible without the wonderful donors, volunteers, phlebotomists, Jeri Garringer, WPGW, The Commercial Review and Jay Community Center (JCC).
What a beautiful tribute to Rachel, so much outpouring of support for her family. She was truly loved by her community.
Jeri Garringer, account manager for the American Red Cross shared the following information about the drive: The average units collected at JCC over the last year is 78. Not having an idea where to start, the goal was set at 95, hoping 125 people would come to give, which would hopefully get us to the 95 goal. You help us exceed this goal with 135 donors registered (152 came in). The previous record was 125. We greatly appreciate everyone who came in and thank you for your patience and support.
We had an amazing 22 first time donors (the average is two per drive). Another wonderful record set — all these new donors who have never given did because they wanted to honor Rachel. We hope that you will continue to donate in upcoming drives as several regular donors reached gallon milestones. Again, we can’t thank you enough for your willingness to patiently wait to donate.
The American Red Cross really, really needed the units in August (Emergency Appeal) and 119 units of blood were collected. One hundred and one units were whole blood. These units can be made into three life-saving blood products — red cells, platelets and plasma. Nine units were double red cells, which means two units of red cells were collected from one donor. This means the drive has the potential to help up to 312 people.
We can’t thank you enough for your participation and support in the drive honoring Rachel’s memory. Think of how many lives will be changed forever because of your donation.
With sincere gratitude, thank you from the family of Rachel (Osterholt) Theurer.
