Mardi Gras café to be held in commons
Taking Note
The Jay County High School French Club will host its Mardi Gras Café from 5 to 7 p.m. today in the southwest corner of the commons. Home-cooked French food will be served at reasonable prices.
Valentine’s event
A Valentine’s event will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Limberlost State Historic Site Visitor Center in Geneva.
The movie “A Girl of the Limberlost” will be shown and there will be a presentation about barred owl courtship and family life.
There will be refreshments and door prizes. The cost is $5 and reservations are encouraged. To make reservations, call (260) 368-7428 or email [email protected].
Spelling Bee
General Shanks recently held its Spelling Bee.
The winner was Mara Bader, the daughter of Christian and Missy Bader, and the alternate was Destiny McManus, the daughter of Laura McManus. They are both fifth grade students.
Mara will represent General Shanks at the Star Press Spelling Bee on March 12 at Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie.
Library events
Anyone wanting technical assistance for their eReader or tablet can join the Tech Table from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. at Jay County Public Library, 315 N. Ship St. in Portland.
The JayCPL Writers’ Guild will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 29 to discuss blogs and how they can help develop writing skills.
Special needs adults and their caregivers are going to make snowmen at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 25.

Graduated
Genavieve Wendel, Fort Recovery, graduated from the University of Dayton (Ohio) on Dec. 19.
Dean’s list
Will Rowles was named to the dean’s list at the University of Cincinnati (Ohio). He is the son of Darry and Cheryl Rowles, rural Portland.
Luke Rowles, Portland, was named to the fall semester dean’s list at Wabash College in Crawsfordsville.
Luke was also elected and sworn into the Student Senate as a representative for the class of 2019.
President’s list
Kyle Siegrist, rural Jay County, was named to the president’s list at Trine University at Angola. The honor is for students who take 15 or more credit hours and earn a grade point average between 3.750 and 4.0.
