Fort Recovery has chosen a new 2016 reconstruction project after the Williams Street proposal fell through because of its high estimated cost.
For about $125,000, the village will pave the block of Elm Street between Milligan and Wiggs streets.
The project includes paving 280 feet of road, as well as adding curbs and sidewalks.
In supporting that option, council member Erik Fiely noted people walk along that street despite its lack of sidewalks.
“That and it’s a low-cost option. Gives us more money for next year,” he said.
Council had planned to spend up to $275,000 on a reconstruction project. Choice One Engineering estimated the Williams Street proposal, including widening the street and adding sidewalks, would cost $500,000. Village administrator Randy Diller cut some costs from the estimate, but it was still around $400,000. Council also considered working on Main Street between Center and Wiggs streets for $270,000, Harrison Street between Washington and Caldwell streets for $170,000 and Wiggs and Gwendolyn streets between Milligan and Wayne streets for $275,000.
In other business, council members Dave Bretz, Dave Garman, Allen Post, Cliff Wendel and Fiely, absent Scott Pearson:
•Passed on first reading an ordinance authorizing an agreement with St. Henry about the speed trailer the villages jointly purchased. The ordinance, which includes sharing insurance costs.
•Appointed Harold Fiely to the park board. Fort Recovery School Board is expected to appoint Dan Carr.
This will keep the membership the same while keeping the board in line with the requirement that the village’s selections live within the village and the school board’s live within the school district. The residency rules were swapped in the village’s old ordinance, which council corrected at its Jan. 18 meeting.
•Heard from village solicitor and grants administrator Erin Minor that the park board’s meeting at 7 p.m. March 14 will include time for public input on a NatureWorks grant the village is applying for with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
•Were reminded by Minor the village is still accepting donations for benches at Community Park.
•Learned the village has purchased one 8-inch Asus Android tablet, as council agreed to at its previous meeting in an effort to reduce paper usage. Fiely is testing out the tablet.
•Heard from Diller that Brandon Wyerick, a village police officer, was named citizen of the year by the Fort Recovery Chamber of Commerce. Roger Broerman and Rod Thobe, the mayor and council president who resigned at the end of 2015, will be inducted into the hall of fame at an awards banquet March 13.
