Dunkirk starts a new program
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Dunkirk Police Department recently presented a neighborhood crime watch program to the citizens of Dunkirk and asked for their participation in implementing the program for the city.
It is hoped that the implementation of this program will bring a reduction in crime and an overall restoration of pride in Dunkirk. By taking an active role in a program such as this, a better quality of life in a specific neighborhood could be achieved and, at the same time, we can get to know our neighbors better.
In an effort to publicize the crime watch program, Dunkirk Police Department officers, along with the help of other volunteers, hand delivered nearly 900 flyers door to door to Dunkirk residents’ homes. We have also used other advertising outlets.
In all, 78 Dunkirk residents attended the program presentations, where there were many great questions and suggestions presented as well as a willingness to participate and become involved.
Over the course of the next couple of weeks, representatives from the Dunkirk Police Department will be contacting those residents who signed up for the program to further discuss necessary needs in their specific neighborhoods of our community.
It is hoped that once the crime watch program is fully implemented into our neighborhoods that it will thrive for both residents of Dunkirk and the Dunkirk Police Department for years to come.
In closing, I would like to personally thank the Dunkirk Police Department officers and volunteers who participated and put in the extra effort of our attempts to make the neighborhood crime watch program a success. I would also like to express my gratitude to Dunkirk City Council members who took the time to attend the meetings and meet the citizens residing in their districts. The efforts of the officers, volunteers, mayor’s office and city council do not go unnoticed.
Respectfully,
Dane A. Mumbower
Dunkirk Police Chief
