Both Prince and Pauper fought pain

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
“The Prince and the Pauper” is a novel by one of my favorite authors, Mark Twain. “The Prince and the Pauper” is a story about Prince Edward, son of Henry VIII, Tom Canty, a pauper.
The two trade places in hopes of finding a freedom from the problems they believe plague them because of the situations into which they were born. The switch gives them valuable life lessons.
I think the moral of the story is regardless of socioeconomic level there are problems, and sometimes you have to experience the other side to appreciate life and those experiences along with a new-found appreciation for life can be advantageous in finding solutions to the problems the world is experiencing.
There have been numerous adaptations of “The Prince and the Pauper” since its publication in 1882. And today there will be one more.
Once upon a time, there was a man named Prince, who was born in Detroit with the gift of music that everyone loved and all in the world knew his name. They danced and sang and waited to see him, for his talent brought him fame.
Once upon a time, there was a man named Pauper, who too was born in Detroit, sadly to say no one recognized his name, but he and Prince had problems just the same.
The burden they shared was that of pain.
In a quest to stop the pain, they found a man who claimed to be a healer to all, and if Prince and Pauper would grease the wheel, he in turn would make them feel so unreal.
Looking for a way to ease the pain, they gave the man all they had in hopes to gain relief.
Alas, what they sought was not what they got, for to ease the pain the price was steep. And in the end, all did weep for the pills they took got them hooked. More’s the pity for in the city of Detroit the loss of two lives, one was mourned and one was not.
Whether you are a Prince or Pauper, don’t let drugs write your story. Take control of your life, get the help you need by calling the Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition (housed at the Portland Police Department) at (260) 726-7161 and find your happily ever after.
