Katy Smeltzer left Portland with her name on the Jay County record board in three spots.
In the final meet of her freshman season, she etched herself into collegiate record books.
Smeltzer, a 2015 Jay County High School graduate, was part of a record-setting 200-yard freestyle relay team for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team during the 2016 NAIA National Championships from March 2 through Saturday at Columbus Aquatic Center in Columbus, Georgia.
She joined sophomore Brittany Litke, senior Anna Clayton and sophomore Blandine Tantart to finish with a time of 1 minute, 36.8 seconds. Smeltzer handled the second leg and had a split of 24.38 seconds.
It was one of two record-setting performances for the Patriot girls, who scored 276 points to finish fifth.
The Patriot quartet was seeded fourth for the finals with their preliminary time of 1:37.73. They also teamed to swim the 400 freestyle relay, but were disqualified.
Smeltzer also competed in a trio of individual events, finishing 21st in the 100 freestyle (54.27 seconds), 22nd in the 100 butterfly (1:01.18) and 28th in the 50 freestyle (25.09).

Kegan Comer
Jay County – 2013
Was one of five University of St. Francis players to reach double figures Wednesday as it won in the opening-round of the NAIA Division II men’s basketball tournament 96-81 over No. 8 seed Dakota State University.
Comer was nearly perfect from the field, finishing 6-for-7 en route to a 14-point effort. His lone miss came from long distance, and he also had a pair of steals.

The Cougars (30-4) advance to play No. 4 seed Mount Mercy (26-7) in the quarterfinal round Friday at College of the Ozarks’ Keeter Gymnasium in Point Outlook, Missouri. They are just the second team in 52 years of St. Francis men’s basketball to reach the 30-win mark.

Chandler Ingle
South Adams – 2015
Entered as a pinch runner and scored the game-winning run for the Goshen College baseball team in a come-from-behind 10-9 victory Tuesday against Lourdes.
With the Maple Leafs (5-10) trailing 8-7 in the top of the seventh, Ingle entered to pinch run after catcher Clinton Stroble II was hit by a pitch with two outs.
The next batter, Preston Carr, ripped a three-run double, scoring Ingle from first base as the eventual game winner.

Kyle Selvey
Jay County – 2014
Came off the bench as a pinch runner to score a run Friday for the Huntington University baseball team in a 9-2 loss to St. Catharine.
Selvey has entered two games this season for the Foresters (2-9) and has yet to record a plate appearance.
