Breaking school records is just another day at the office for Eme Miller. On Friday and Saturday, her record-breaking runs led to a pair of conference titles.
Miller won Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships for the Defiance College women’s track team in both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000 run at the meet hosted by Bluffton.
The 2012 Jay County High School graduate opened the meet in style, easily winning the HCAC crown in the steeplechase. Her time of 11 minutes, 9.96 seconds, was more than 35 seconds faster than the runner-up and not only broke her own school record (11:20.11) but obliterated the conference record of 11:26.21 set by Anderson’s Candace DeLong in 2011.
Her second conference title came Saturday as she was the only runner to break the 18-minute mark in the 5,000 run. Her time of 17:58.46 was four seconds faster than runner-up Teresa Wiczyski of Hanover and obliterated her own Yellowjacket record by more than 20 seconds.
She also placed fourth in the 1,500 run, finishing less than three seconds off the winning pace with her time of 4:54.64. That improved upon the record of 4:58 she set just a week earlier at Ohio Northern University’s Polar Bear Invitational.
Miller will leave Defiance as the best female distance runner in school history, as she also owns indoor records in the 1,000-, 3,000- and 5,000-meter events as well as the mile and cross country records for both the 5K and 6K races.

Affolder added his second double in three games on Monday in a 2-1 loss in the first game of a doubleheader against Taylor University. He then had a hit in game two, a 4-2 win in eight innings.
