Cancer walk scheduled for June 25

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
In the next few weeks Jay County newspaper subscribers will find 2016 WALK Against Cancer advertisements in their newspaper.
It is our hope that the community will join us June 25 at Jay County High School to raise money for Jay County Cancer Society. The cancer society provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County for medical expenses, travel, prescriptions, testing, etc.
The survivor dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. (reservations required by June 13) followed by the vendor area and activities for the family from 6 to 9 p.m., opening ceremonies with balloon launch at 8:30 p.m. and the luminary ceremony at 9:30 p.m. This year many donated items will be raffled off at 8:30 pm. Raffle tickets will be available in advance and the night of the WALK this year.
The event will be held in the JCHS auxiliary gym. Flyers for the event are available at Jay County Public Library, Jay County Hospital and many local businesses. The flyer is also available online at http://www.jaycountychamber.com. The flyer has the times of all the events and a pledge sheet on the back. Any walker who collects more than $100 will receive a free WALK T-shirt while supplies last.
Thank you to our 2016 platinum sponsors: Dr. Charles Miller Memorial, Stoneridge Electronics, Delta Theta Tau XI, Schmit Chiropractic Offices LLC, Mayor Randy Geesaman Charity Golf Outing, Fellowship Baptist Church, Jay County Hospital/IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Church of the Brethren, First Bank of Berne – Portland branch, Dr. Stephen Myron and Inman U-Loc Storage
Also thank you to our gold sponsors: Wholesale Carpet Outlet Express, Arch Bridge Kroozers, Family Worship Center, Dr. David Fullenkamp OD PC, Coca-Cola Refreshments, Knights of Columbus, Blacksmith Union Local 1620, Remember When – The VanSkyock Family, New Beginnings Holiness Church of Blaine, Williamson, Spencer and Penrod Funeral Home, Kiwanis Club of Portland, First Merchants Corporation, Ali and Doug Inman in memory of Susie Inman, Cincinnatus League and Jeff and Tammy Bulmahn.
How can you help?
There are many ways: collect money from your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc. as pledges or for luminaries and keep track on the pledge sheet, then bring the pledge sheet and money to the WALK. Ask your employer to make a donation on your behalf. Help spread the word by sharing this information with as many people as possible. Display the flyer in your place of business. Have a charity fundraiser at your place of employment, church or philanthropic group and donate the funds raised to the WALK Against Cancer. The ways to help are endless and the difference every dollar makes is priceless.
Remember that 100 percent of the money donated to Jay County Cancer Society remains in Jay County helping our neighbors and friends with their uninsured cancer-related expenses
If you would like to volunteer at the WALK or need additional information, please contact us at (260) 726-8110 and leave a message.
Donations are accepted the night of the WALK or anytime at P.O. Box 614, Portland, Indiana, 47371.
We look forward to seeing you on the evening of June 25 as we remember those lost, honor those who are suffering and celebrate with those who have won the fight against cancer.
Thank you,
Angela Twigg and Tisha Gierhart
