The Patriots put up a strong fourth quarter to force overtime.
They couldn’t continue the magic in the extra session.
Jay County High School’s freshman boys basketball team dropped its season and home opener Monday, 38-35, to the Delta Eagles in overtime.
Trailing 25-23 heading into the final quarter, Noah Arbuckle scored four of his game-high 13 points in the fourth quarter to help the Patriots (0-1) outscore the Eagles 9-7. A basket and four free throws were the difference for the Eagles in the extra frame, as the Patriots only managed three points in overtime.
Jay County had a 10-4 lead after the first quarter, but double-digit point totals in each of the second and third quarters gave Delta the advantage heading into the fourth. The Patriots led 17-15 at half.
Gabe Link scored two points in each quarter to finish second on the Patriot squad with eight points. Sheldon Upp chipped in with six points, and Brayden Sprunger added four.
Gavin Lambert’s three points came in the second quarter as he drained the only 3-point basket for the Patriots.
Falkner leads WJ
DUNKIRK — Quinn Faulkner scored in double figures in leading the West Jay Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team to a 28-25 victory Monday over the Blackford Bruins.
West Jay’s eighth grade team lost, 23-14.
Faulkner totaled 16 points in leading the Eagle seventh graders. Kess McBride tallied nine points, Camden Harrison totaled two points and Trenton Alexander had one.
Logan Brown and Hunter Shumaker had five and four points respectively to pace the WJMS eighth graders.
Lewis Crump and Drew Powers had two points each, and Riley Foster made one free throw.
