Mumbower says thank you for inaugural event

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:
On Saturday, Oct. 8, the inaugural Dunkirk Police Department/Dunkirk Neighborhood Crime Watch crime awareness event took place at Dunkirk City Park.
The goal of this event was to raise crime awareness, prevention and citizen involvement.
During the event, citizens had the opportunity to meet with City of Dunkirk police officers as well as city officials who were in attendance. Citizens also had the opportunity to meet with officers from other law enforcement agencies, which included Portland Police Department, Indiana State Police’s crime scene investigations section and Jay County Sheriff’s Office.
Everyone was able to enjoy hot dogs, drinks, popcorn, cotton candy and a great socialization with friends while working toward a common goal.
Children had the chance for hands-on experiences with police officers while exploring the many police vehicles and firetrucks on display and also learning about forensic science through interactive activities. There was also a game with a prize, handouts and a bounce house that kids could spend time in.
Without support and donations, this event would not have been possible and I would like to send a personal big thank you to the officers of Dunkirk Police Department, Dunkirk Neighborhood Crime Watch members, Portland Police Chief Nathan Springer and officers Michael Brewster, Cody Jesse and his K9 Katja, Josh Stephenson and Hannah Atienzo, Indiana State Police crime scene investigator John Petro, Jay County Sheriff’s Offices deputy Greg Franks, Dunkirk Fire Chief Steve Fields and firefighters Richard Long and Jim Millikan.
I would also like to express my gratitude to Dunkirk Councilmen Jack Robbins and Tom Johnson, the City of Dunkirk and Mayor Gene Ritter, Pam Robbins, Al Curts, Tony Lennartz, Austin Sampley, Randy and Deb Storie, Stephanie at Miller’s Dunkirk Pantry and CVS/Pharmacy of Dunkirk.
Thank you to all.
Dane A. Mumbower
Dunkirk Police Chief
