Colts could be in trouble

Rays of Insight

Carson Wentz is a Hall of Famer.
The 49ers are going to the Super Bowl.
Eli Rogers is the second coming of Antonio Brown.
Nonsense.
Those are the kind of overreactions NFL fans tend to have after the first week of the season.
Carson Wentz quarterbacked his team to a win over the Cleveland Browns? He must be an all-time great.
San Francisco obliterated the Rams on Monday night? A dynasty must be about to begin.
Rogers had six catches and a touchdown in his debut? Pittsburgh is unbelievable at finding wide receiver talent.
Could one, or even all, of those things be true? Sure, it’s possible.
But we can hardly know any of those things after one week.
Two weeks also isn’t a huge sample size. But after the Sunday (and Thursday and Monday) games, there are some things we know about the NFL.

NE knows the game
Tom Brady is suspended. Rob Gronkowski has yet to play because of an injury. And yet, the Patriots just keep doing what the Patriots do.
Win.
New England went on the road to play one of the best teams in the NFC in its season opener. All it did was walk out of Arizona with a win in which Jimmy Garoppolo, a quarterback most of us had never heard of a year ago, completed 73 percent of his passes.
Then, when Garoppolo got hurt Sunday against Miami, an even more obscure signal caller came off the bench to complete 6-of-9 passes for 92 yards as the Patriots held on for the victory.
Can New England win either of the next two games if Jacoby Brissett is its starting quarterback?
With both at home, I wouldn’t bet against the possibility.
Either way, the Patriots already have two wins without Brady, which is probably the best their fans could have hoped for.

Williams is for real
I always felt bad for DeAngelo Williams when he was with the Panthers.
The running back out of Memphis had one great season — 1,515 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns (plus two more receiving) — in 2008, but never approached that level again.

Some of the problem was injuries. He missed three games in 2009 and 10 apiece in 2010 and 2014, his final year in Carolina.
But I also contended that the Panthers never used Williams correctly. They drafted Jonathan Stewart two years after Williams and could never seem to decide which one they liked better.
Instead, they split time between the two backs, and neither even seemed to get into a rhythm.
Williams was incredible — 907 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 starts last season — when Le’Veon Bell was sidelined. At age 33, ancient in running back years, he has continued that production this year with 237 yards and two TDs on the ground in addition to 10 catches and a TD through the air.
Even though it’s late in his career, it’s nice that Williams has finally gotten the chance to show his immense talent.

Colts have issues
Sorry Colts fans, but it’s true.
A year ago when your team was 0-2, I encouraged you. I told you it would be OK.
Indianapolis won its next three games, and, if not for a litany of injuries, likely would have won the mediocre AFC South.
This year, it’s different.
The Colts lost a winnable opener on their home field, then fell to the defending Super Bowl champions on the road. They’re 0-2 again.
Indianapolis has given up a league-worst 73 points through two games. Andrew Luck has been sacked seven times.
Speaking of Luck, consider these stats:
Player A — A 58.2 completion percentage with 56 interceptions in 57 starts.
Player B — A 62.0 completion percentage with 56 interceptions in 66 starts.
Player A is Luck.
Player B? Ryan Tannehill, who was drafted in the same year.
Their career quarterback ratings are an identical 85.3.
Scared yet?
You should be.
Yes, Indianapolis will have a chance to rebound as it gets to play fellow 0-2 squads Jacksonville and Chicago after dealing with San Diego this week. But history tells us an 0-2 start leaves any team with about a 12 percent chance of making the playoffs.
Those aren’t good odds. And the Colts are already two games behind division rival Houston.
It could be a long year.
