Join in state's bicentennial celebration
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
Happy birthday Indiana!
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the State of Indiana.
The signature event that has been planned by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission is the torch relay. The torch will travel through all 92 counties in Indiana.
It will arrive in Jay County at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jay/Randolph county line. Twenty torch bearers will carry the torch north on U.S. 27 to Jay County Fairgrounds. The torch will arrive at the bridge in Portland at 5 p.m. A parade highlighting the state’s bicentennial theme — “Celebrate History — Ignite the Future” — will follow as the torch continues to Jay County Fairgrounds.
Many activities are planned on Sept. 27 at the fairgrounds for the Jay County celebration of the bicentennial.
3 p.m. — The “Bicentennial Experience” mobile unit will be open to the public along with displays and demonstrations in Floral Hall.
6 p.m. — State cauldron lighting ceremony at the “Bicentennial Experience,” free hog roast at the Bubp Building, entertainment at the Farmer’s Building and kids activities north of the grandstand.
8 p.m. — A grandstand program that will include Jay County Community Band, torchbearer recognition, presentation of plaques to communities and fireworks.
We hope you will plan to join Jay County on Tuesday as we celebrate the 200th birthday of the State of Indiana.
