Step up to fight against drug issue

To the editor:

It’s been just over five weeks since “Connecting the Links” brought more than 400 Jay County citizens together.

Those of us present and those who later read the in-depth testimonies were given only a glimpse into the myriad issues created by addiction in our community. Challenges related to families, schools, law enforcement, adjudication and health care now face us.

Jack Ronald, president and publisher of The Commercial Review stated in his editorial on Feb. 28, “They’ve made it next to impossible to ignore.” Considering it someone else’s problem is no longer a preference.

Undoubtedly the issue of drug and alcohol addiction is impacting the entire community. It is not someone else’s problem — it is a community problem. Accordingly, the consequences of drug and alcohol abuse will not lessen without involvement from the whole community. Relying upon only certain sectors of our community to provide solutions will not work.

It is not just law enforcement’s duty to keep us free of these issues. Our citizens must become educated, eager to take a stand against illegal activity, willing to provide and promote outreach for those in need, and ultimately work with all families in our community to provide the multi-faceted response this challenge requires.

No family, no individual, is immune to the impact of drug and alcohol addiction on this community.

But where do we begin?

Take the next step and learn more about Jay County Drug Prevention Coalition (JCDPC). It is the goal of the coalition to reduce the use and abuse of alcohol, marijuana and illicit/prescription drugs by both youth and adults in our community.

The coalition is comprised of a variety of community representatives: parents, leaders, health care workers, social service providers, media, school personnel, law enforcement officers, recovery groups, retirees, and even young people. Together we promote healthy living and a drug-free Jay County.

We want all citizens to be involved in making this happen. The task before us may seem overwhelming, but we can prevail if we work together. Jay County is a special community — a community like no other, and certainly worth fighting for.

As Jack Ronald stated, “Connecting was a good first step.”

Now is the time to take the next step. Will you?
