Community worked together well

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

Recently there has been much discussion among the residents of county road 200 South in regard to large truck traffic and the safety of our road.

That discussion led to meetings with local officials about what we can do to help make our road last longer and be safer for local residents.

With that in mind, we would like to thank the county commissioners for recently recognizing the existing ordinance that was first approved in 1995 and amended in 2008 and again in 2010 that prohibits large trucks from using county road 200 South between U.S. 27 and Indiana 67. This discussion has led to the posting of “NO TRUCK” signs on county road 200 South (as reported in The CR on April 4).

We would also like to recognize the support of this initiative by POET, U.S. Aggregates and Milestone (whose proposed asphalt plant would be located near POET). This support is much appreciated.

Finally, we have met with Sheriff Dwane Ford, who understands both the economic and safety impact on our community. While we hope that simply making our industrial partners and truck drivers aware of this change will lead to improved compliance, it is great knowing that law enforcement is supportive as well.

We believe that having a strong industrial presence in our community is crucial to our local economy through the provision of tax revenue as well as local employment for the citizens of Jay County. That said, while the trucks that deliver to and from these companies are vital to their success, it is imperative that they use state and U.S. highways designed for the weight of their vehicles for transporting their goods.

With county tax revenues from agriculture shrinking in the coming years, protecting our existing infrastructure and minimizing future expense to Jay County is crucial. Not only is this road and these bridges not designed to support the weight and volume of these trucks, the presence of large trucks on this narrow road presents serious safety concerns for local non-industrial traffic.

It is great knowing that we live in a community that works hard to balance the economic benefits of our agricultural and industrial partners as well as the safety and well-being of local citizens. It is not always easy to accomplish, but working together is a good start.
