Bill deserves Holcomb’s veto
Letters to the Editor
To the editor:
The Indiana Legislature has just done a very bad thing in passing House Bill 1523, a bill that would allow government agencies to charge people $20 hour to process public records requests.
While the legislators and proponents of this bill would never admit it, the truth be told, this bill is calculated to make it tougher for citizens to obtain information from the public agencies that have things they prefer to hide.
The author of this bill is Rep. Kathy Richardson. It is co-authored by Reps. Philip GiaQuinta, Karen Engleman and Kevin Mahon. The Senate sponsors were Rodric Bray, James Merritt and Timothy Lanane.
The voters should remember these politicians the next time they run and vote them out.
I obtained through public records requests a very disturbing email involving the Hanover Community School Corporation in which the corporation was scheming to terminate an employee.
It is no wonder such efforts are made to make it harder for people to receive public records. The records maintained by government agencies are the property of the people and the people should not have to be required to pay even more money than is currently allowed to inspect the records.
Gov. Eric Holcomb should do right and veto this infected bill.
