Portland Park Board members got a brief update on city park projects for the rest of the year during their meeting Tuesday.
Street and parks superintendent Ryan Myers, who was not in attendance, provided an update via email. He noted that work has begun to install a Swing of Faith at Hudson Family Park. Other projects for the year include installation of a new scoreboard for the Portland Rockets and upgrades to the restrooms at Runkle-Miller Field at Portland Memorial Park.
Board members Shauna Runkle, Giles Laux and Chris Compton, absent Rod Ashman and Kristi Betts, also discussed putting about $100,000 left over from the construction of Portland Water Park into a non-reverting fund to be used exclusively for work at the facility.
The board also agreed to allow Mitch Harter of Blackjack Promotions to host a cornhole tournament at 11 a.m. Aug. 19 at Haynes Park to benefit Jay County Cancer Society. Harter said he hopes to host another cornhole tournament in October and possibly start a cornhole league in the future.
Board members did not discuss raises for lifeguards at Portland Water Park, an issue city council had referred back to them. The park board had already approved the raises — to $8 per hour from the previous $7.25 with an additional 25-cent increase per year in the future — but council members were concerned that it may not have been clear that those raises would apply to all seasonal employees, not just lifeguards. City council tabled a vote at its July 18 meeting, asking park board to address the issue again.
Regardless, the city has already paid the lifeguards the increased rate this summer on the order of Mayor Randy Geesaman.
