Biofuels boost our economy
To the editor:
A recent letter distorted many facts about biofuels to rationalize repealing the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).
Let’s set the record straight.
First, biofuels boost octane and are cleaner-burning, making them better for your engine and the planet. The United States Department of Agriculture estimates biofuels help reduce carbon emissions by more than 40 percent. The truth is, biofuels are essential to reducing harmful pollutants in the air we breathe.
Second, biofuels save drivers money. That’s because biofuels are less expensive to produce than other gasoline additives. Switching from standard E10 fuel to E15 would save drivers 3 to 10 cents per gallon each time they fill up.
Third, homegrown biofuels are proudly “Made in the USA.” Every day, local farmers supply the feedstock to biorefineries right here in Indiana. That not only helps reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil, but grows jobs and boosts incomes in rural communities. POET’s four biorefineries in Indiana support more than 5,300 jobs and add $324 million to household earnings across the state.
Special interest groups will no doubt continue to launch misleading attacks. That’s why we must remind policymakers of the continued importance of biofuels and the RFS. Because our economy, our environment and our nation’s energy independence depend on them.
