For nearly 10 minutes the Patriots were firing on all cylinders.

The offense was working, shots were falling and the defense kept the Trojans in check.

Just 75 seconds into the second quarter, they had doubled-up the visitors, 28-14.

But something happened, and Kirk Comer isn’t quite sure as to the cause.

The Jay County High School girls basketball team had its offense go dry in the second quarter and allowed a 9-0 run in the fourth in a 45-38 loss Thursday to the New Castle Trojans.

“I thought we got off to a good start,” said Comer, Jay County’s coach. “Then we fell apart. We quit doing everything that got us the lead.”

The Patriots (3-4), who led Homestead late in the third quarter Tuesday but couldn’t hang on then either, were 9-of-12 from the field in the first period but just 1-for-7 for the remainder of the half.

And after going 10-of-19 (52.6 percent) from the field before halftime, Jay County was 4-of-21 (19.1 percent) in the final eight minutes.

“The first half we were pushing the ball, getting good shots,” Comer said. “The second half we’re not executing any offense. We were shooting bad shots … I thought we came out well but after that I don’t know what happened.”

New Castle coach Brandon Bradley said the difference for his squad was the fact it was able to follow its scouting report.

“Everything that Jay County does we had scripted in to the game plan and we weren’t following it one bit,” said Bradley, whose team is a Class 3A sectional rival of Jay County and moved to 4-6 on the year. “We were just kind of creating it as we went.”

It helped, too, that the Trojans’ leading scorer was able to find the basket more often.

Junior Cameron Tabor, who entered the contest averaging more than 23 points per game and has received at least one Division I offer, had just six points in the opening 12 minutes. The Patriots often had her double- or triple-teamed inside, and didn’t give her much in the way of opportunities from the outside either.

But in the second half, especially the fourth quarter, she was able to drive to the basket. While there, she finished, and got awarded by drawing a pair of fouls. She scored eight of the Trojans’ nine points to start the fourth quarter, which erased a 34-30 deficit to start the period and put them out front, 39-34.

Tabor’s 18 points led all players.

Meanwhile, Jay County missed its first three shots and turned the ball over once during the run. The Patriots finished with 21 turnovers, including their last four possessions.

Jay County has now lost six consecutive games against New Castle.

For eight minutes it looked like the streak was going to come to an abrupt end. JCHS scored off the opening tip, stayed ahead for four minutes and started to pull away in the second part of the opening quarter.

Junior Kendra Muhlenkamp had eight points and three of her four assists in the first period, and Shelby Caldwell swished a pair of 3-pointers. Hanna Ault and Hanna Dillon also had shots from long range, helping the Patriots close the period on a 12-1 run after leading 12-11.

Muhlenkamp led the Patriots with 11 points and hauled in a game-high nine rebounds. Caldwell finished with seven points and Ault had seven.

Muhlenkamp scored on a fast break in the second quarter to make it 26-12. Caldwell followed a Mackayla Huckeby basket with her final two points of the game to put her team out front 28-14 when things went awry for the home team.

Despite one player being out with an illness, another fighting through one on the court and a third battling an ailing injury, Comer was not pleased with the effort in the final three quarters.

“One thing that we can do is we can play hard,” he said. “I’ve never, ever, felt like this team didn’t give all they had.

“Well tonight I did. I felt like we didn’t play as hard as we could.”

Pacie Denney had a season high scoring total and Grace Saxman joined her in double figures as Jay County won, 45-25.

The Patriots (5-2) had a 12-6 advantage after the first quarter before pushing the lead to 24-11 at intermission. Both teams scored six points in the third quarter, and Jay County had a strong 15-point effort in the final seven minutes for the win.

Denney led all players with 15 points, and Saxman chipped in a baker’s dozen. Aubrie Schwieterman contributed five points while Kendal Garringer and Macey Weitzel had four points each.
