Eric Hemmelgarn was the next man up on Saturday.
He helped the Cougars get back to the title game.
Hemmelgarn, a 2014 Jay County High School graduate, was thrust into emergency kicking duties for the University of Saint Francis football team in its 43-36 victory over No. 3 Morningside College in the NAIA Football Championship Series semifinal it hosted.
The redshirt senior, who kicked for Jay County in high school, had a blast from the past as he stepped in to kick when Cougars kicker Gavin Garner suffered a hip injury after kicking an extra point. The No. 2 kicker for the top-ranked and defending national champion Saint Francis was unavailable.
Hemmelgarn recorded seven kickoffs that covered 363 yards for an average of 51 yards per kick.
He also assisted on two tackles, and along with Wilmer Cole was named NAIA co-defensive players of the game.
Hemmelgarn and the Cougars (13-0) will defend their national title on Dec. 16 against No. 2 Reinhardt University in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The former set a school record for the University of Findlay women’s swim team as it finished fourth in the Calvin College Invitational Nov. 30 through Sunday.
Ashton anchored the 800-yard freestyle relay that set a school record as it was fourth in 7 minutes, 39.26 seconds. She had a split of 1:57.99.
She also swam the butterfly leg of the 400 and 200 medley relay teams that were second and fourth respectively, and began the 400 freestyle relay that was seventh.
Individually, she was eighth in the 200 butterfly and 10th in the 100 butterfly.
Brette’s best finish was in the 100 backstroke as she was ninth. She was also 10th in the 200 backstroke and 12th in the 200 individual medley.

Earned another NAIA national ‘B’ standard for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team on Saturday in a 178-52 win over West Virginia Tech.
Smeltzer was second in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.2 seconds to earn her national standard. She was also second in the 50 butterfly, helped the 200 freestyle relay finish first in 1 minute, 41.67 seconds, and swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay that was third.
On Friday, she swam the freestyle leg of the 200 medley relay in 25.68 seconds as it was first in 1:56.28. She was also runner-up in the 50 freestyle.

Competed for the Ball State University women’s swim team as it finished sixth on Saturday at the Miami Invitational.
Vormohr helped three relay squads finish in the top eight. She swam the freestyle leg of the 400-yard medley relay that was fifth. Vormohr anchored the 200 freestyle relay that was eighth, and together with Bader the 400 freestyle relay placed seventh.
Individually they each finished 10th. Bader did so in the 200 butterfly, and Vormohr did it in the backstroke.
Sawyer Miller

Finished runner-up on Saturday for the Indiana Tech wrestling team in the Indiana Little State Invitational at Manchester University.
Miller, who is ranked No. 2 at 125 pounds in NAIA, got pinned by Kaleb Guzior of Wabash in 6 minutes, 43 seconds.
The two-time IHSAA state medalist opened the tournament with a 16-4 major decision over Wabash’s AJ Beldon. He then pinned Indianapolis’ DJ Smith in 6:10, and earned a forfeit in the semifinal.
Miller improves to 7-3 on the year.

Was one away from his season-high scoring on Wednesday for the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team in an 86-56 win over Aquinas College.
Schwieterman was 3-of-7 from the field and made all but one of his six free throws to finish with 11 points. He also had five rebounds and a pair of steals to help the NAIA Division II No. 5 Warriors (9-2, 4-1 Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference) bounce back from consecutive losses.
He had two points and four rebounds on Saturday as Tech lost to No. 2 Cornerstone, 83-65.

Played for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team in a pair of wins recently.
Kahlig was 2-of-8 from the field and made one of his five 3-point attempts with two free throws to finish with seven points in a 94-71 win Nov. 30 over Kentucky Wesleyan. He also had three rebounds, an assist and a steal.
He also had three points and a rebound as the Oilers (7-2, 2-0 Greater Midwest Athletic Conference) defeated Trevecca Nazarene 61-56 on Saturday.

Lost both of his matches for the Manchester University wrestling team in the Indiana Little State Invitational it hosted on Saturday.
The 165-pounder dropped his first match of the day by a 17-2 tech fall to eventual champion Jake Gross of Indiana Tech. The freshman then dropped a 3-2 decision to Ancilla’s Wilson Lopshire.

Wendel was 1-of-4 from the field for two points. She also had two rebounds, two assists and four steals for the Red Storm (10-1, 2-0 River States Conference), who have pushed their winning streak to eight games.

The freshman notched three points and a pair of rebounds for the Cougars (7-4, 2-2 Crossroads League) in a 69-50 loss to Taylor.

Managed single-digit scoring totals for the Brescia University women’s basketball team as it split a pair of games recently.
Dunn had two points on 1-of-5 shooting with two rebounds on Nov. 30 in a 74-43 loss to IU-Southeast. She added five points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal on Saturday for the Bearcats (3-6, 1-1 River States Conference) in a 60-44 win.

Kaiser came off the bench to go 1-of-6 from the field to finish with two points as the Crusaders dipped to 2-3 on the year and 0-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
