YORKTOWN — The Patriots were far better than the team that beat Burris on Thursday.

They shot well. They distributed the ball. They were stingy on defense.

The Jay County High School boys basketball team was firing on all cylinders again Tuesday as its offense was clicking and its defense was stellar in a 49-29 win over the Yorktown Tigers.

“I thought tonight we played really good on defense,” said JCHS senior Cole Stigleman, whose held the host Tigers to just one point in the third quarter. “It was a team effort. Lots of guys stepped up. They missed a lot of shots but I felt like we contested a lot of them and made it though for them.”

Jay County coach Chris Krieg said it was by far the best defensive game his team has played all season.

“I felt we played really good defense in the first half,” said Krieg, whose team moves to 3-2 on the year and hosts Delta on Friday night before a road showdown with state-line rival Fort Recovery on Saturday. “In the third quarter we came out just on the basketball. Help side was there. We did a good job of covering everything up for them.

“I’m really proud of our kids for that. They knew what they had to do.”

Yorktown (2-4) was 10-for-32 (31.3 percent) from the field, less than half of Jay County’s 64.7 percent shooting. The Tigers were 1-for-18 from the 3-point line, including missing their first 14 shots from long range.

Jay County held a 20-13 lead at half, and began to add to it on the first possession of the third quarter as Max Moser swished a 3-pointer on an assist from Stigleman. On the next trip down the court, Ryan Schlechty dished a pass to Moser for another bucket before a fast-break basket of his own.

Michael Schlechty and Wyatt Geesaman also had baskets along with a Stigleman free throw as Jay County scored a dozen straight to start the second half.

Yorktown’s only point came on a Brennan Baize free throw. The Tigers missed all six shots in the period, including five from long range.

“We always talk about defense dictating our offense,” Krieg said. “Tonight is a prime example of why we do that.”

The Patriots were able to facilitate its offense with relative ease, too. They had assists on 19 of their 22 made field goals.

“It’s awesome,” Stigleman said. “We have a lot of team chemistry, I think, and we like to give the ball to each other. I think having that is really helpful just to get the ball to the open person is always good.

Stigleman had a team-best five assists, and his five rebounds were second to Michael Schlechty’s half dozen. Schlechty and Moser both scored eight points.

Yorktown’s Bobby Smith and Matt Grimes entered the game averaging 13.6 and 12.4 points respectively, but combined for just 13 points against the Patriots. Grimes had 10, six of which came in the fourth quarter.

He made a jumper less than a minute in to snap a stretch of more than nine minutes without a field goal, and swished a triple to snap a slump from long distance.

“We did what we had to do to take them out of the game,” Krieg said. Jay County’s biggest lead was 43-17 almost three minutes into the fourth quarter. “Let someone else beat us, not those two kids. I felt like we did an excellent job. When they were open we were there.”

Jay County struggled to hang on to the basketball but still came away with a 44-34 victory.

The Patriots (4-1) led 22-13 at half after being out front 11-3 to finish the first quarter. They were in front despite a dozen first-half turnovers.

Yorktown clawed back in the third period with a 14-10 scoring margin to trail by four points, but Jay County extended the lead with 13 points in the final seven minutes.

Noah Arbuckle led the Patriots by sharing the game-high of a dozen points. Gabe Link pitched in eight points and Matt Franks totaled six points. Korbin Auker and Gavin Randal finished with five points each.

C team

The Patriots fell behind early and couldn’t recover in a 31-21 loss to Yorktown.

Jay County (1-3) trailed 8-3 after the first period and 14-8 at halftime. Out of the break the Tigers held a 9-4 edge in scoring before the Patriots inched closer but weren’t able to overcome the deficit.

Peyton Nichols had a team-high five points for Jay County. Brinnin Wasson, Brian Williams, Frankie Crump and Gavin Lambert all had three points apiece.
