Jay County Solid Waste Management District made a series of transfers Monday to balance funds for the end of the year and discussed options for investing in 2018.
The district board, meeting a week early because of the Christmas holiday, made more than $10,000 in transfers, including $5,532 to financial manager contract from coordinator/director and $4,576.88 to educational contract from educator.
Other transfers included: $2,235.54 to hourly part-time from household hazardous waste; $1,657.62 to advertising from financial manager contract; $626.77 to financial manager contract from social security; $191 to gas, oil and lube from office supplies; $146.58 to financial manager contract from Medicare; $79.17 to office equipment from software; and $25 to education/training from dues and subscriptions.
Board members also discussed the possibility of investing some of its funds in the year ahead. Following years of financial struggles a decade ago, the district has built up a balance of more than $450,000. It plans to seek quotes for a $100,000 certificate of deposit.
The board also talked about the need for a new site to host its Saturday recycling trailer once a month in Redkey. The trailer has been located at Will’s IGA, but the store closed earlier this year.
Board members Jeanne Houchins and Randy Geesaman plan to attend Thursday’s Redkey Town Council meeting to talk to town council about potential new sites for the trailer.
In other business, the board:
•Agreed to purchase a 2-cubic-yard dumpster for the district office at a cost of $50 from Waste Management. It will be emptied every other week.
•Approved its 2018 meeting schedule. It will meet regularly at 3:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of each month with the exception of when those meetings would fall on holidays in May and December.
•OK’d payment of claims totaling $17,354.62. The district brought in $20,437.54 in tipping fees in November on 11,858.99 tons dumped at Jay County Landfill. The district now has a total cash balance of $463,435.06.
