The Patriots need a break.
Playing their third game in five days — and fourth in eight — the Patriots are welcoming a holiday vacation with open arms.
It gives them time to back to what they haven’t had much time to do.
Practice.
The Jay County High School basketball team struggled defensively at times Tuesday but made enough shots at the other end to beat the Winchester Golden Falcons, 42-35.
“I felt defensively we were awful,” said JCHS coach Chris Krieg, whose team improves to 4-4 on the year and is off until its Dec. 30 matchup with Muncie Central at Muncie Southside Middle School. “Our defensive fundamentals were awful. But on the other hand we have not been able to practice.
“All we’ve been able to do is walk through. We do shooting and walk through.”
Boo Enis, a Winchester senior, torched Jay County from long range as he made all five of his 3-point tries. He swished a pair in the first quarter while scoring all 10 points for the Golden Falcons (1-5). Both of his treys were from the right corner, and each of them answered Cole Stigleman 3-pointers at the other end.
Stigleman finished with a career-high 15 points while also adding a rebound and a block.
Enis, who led all players with 21 points, hit one more in the second quarter as Jay County took a 20-17 lead at half.
“Every one of them was wide open,” Krieg said. “Someone would have a letdown and we would overcorrect to help. Our rotation was terrible getting around to him.”
Winchester fed Enis the ball in one corner, and then as they worked it around the arc he’d slip to the other side and Jay County lost control of him.
“Defensively we were just watching the basketball,” Krieg added. Enis drove the lane twice in the first quarter too, splitting the Patriot defense on his way to the hoop. “We had lost focus of our man. I’m disappointed in our effort defensively.”
Michael Schlechty, a Jay County junior, helped the Patriots build on their 20-17 lead by scoring five consecutive points to start the second half. His first bucket came on a put-back of a Stigleman missed 3-pointer, and his second was after a pass from twin brother Ryan. Michael drew a foul and made the subsequent free throw.
“We needed that,” said Krieg, noting that he hoped Jay County would get a bit of motivation after Wyatt Geesaman rifled a three-quarter court shot that swished through the net to end the first quarter. “I’m really disappointed in (the lack of fire). We just went through the motions tonight.”
Michael Schlechty contributed a dozen points — seven in the second half — and tallied 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. He had a basket in the fourth quarter that stopped a 6-0 run which allowed Winchester to get within four points, 33-29. He was also key on the glass in the final eight minutes as he hauled in five rebounds.
His 5-of-8 effort from the paint was one of the lone bright spots for the Patriots, who were 11-for-21 in the paint.
A Trey Graft 3-pointer pulled the Golden Falcons within one possession late in the fourth quarter before four straight points by the Patriots put the game out of reach.
Jay County junior Parker Grimes matched his season high by scoring seven points, helping the Patriots shoot 15-of-32 (46.9 percent) from the field. Winchester, meanwhile, was 12-of-38 (31.6 percent), including 7-of-18 from long range.

Matthew Franks and Korbin Auker both reached double figures in guiding Jay County to a 43-32 win.
The Patriots (6-2) led by one after the first quarter, 12-11, but used a 12-4 advantage in the second to go ahead by nine at intermission. Jay County held a 10-8 edge during the third quarter before they and the Golden Falcons went point-for-point in the final period.
Franks finished with a game-high 17 points, and Auker contributed 10. Gabe Link tallied seven points, and Xavier Ninde recorded five points while Landon Grimes and Noah Arbuckle had two points each.
C team
Jay County dominated in each quarter but the fourth on its way to a 50-22 victory, it’s biggest win of the season.
The Patriots (2-4) limited Winchester to five points in each of the first two periods while scoring 15 and 16 points respectively during the same time to lead 31-10 at half. They continued to pour it on in the third by adding 16 more points as Winchester managed just six.
Brian Williams scored 15 points to lead all players. Gavin Lambert was second with nine points and Conner Tout added six points. Jaron Alexander chipped in five points as Brinnin Wasson and Peyton Nichols finished with four points apiece.
