Capsule Reports
House fire
A rural Portland man was injured in a fire at his house Tuesday morning.
Portland Fire Department was called at 8:55 a.m. Tuesday to William Coy Jr.’s house at 2879 E. 500 South, Portland. The department arrived on the scene at 9:06 a.m., and were assisted by Salamonia, Ward Township and Southwest Mercer County fire departments. The fire took more than two hours to put out, and the house was a total loss.
Coy was transported to Jay County Hospital by JEMS then flown by Lutheran Air to Fort Wayne to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined.
Theft
A Portland woman reported her gun stolen Tuesday.
Christina D. Limbert, 316 W. High St., told Portland Police Department her loaded black Rock Island Armory .45 handgun was taken from underneath her bed at her house.
The investigation is ongoing.
Deer struck
A Redkey woman struck a deer with her car Tuesday evening.
Jane A. Childs, 48, was driving south on Indiana 67 near its intersection with county road 350 South when a deer jumped in front of her car. She was unable to avoid hitting it with her 2003 Ford Escape.
Damage in the 6 p.m. collision is estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Falling ice
A Salamonia man was injured Tuesday morning when a piece of ice came through his windshield.
Joshua A. Bonifas, 32, was driving east on Indiana 26 near its intersection with county road 100 East when a semi truck driving west passed his truck. As the semi passed, a large piece of ice came off the trailer and hit the windshield of Bonifas’ 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, causing it to crack and entering the cab of the truck.
Bonifas was treated at the scene for a cut on his arm.
Damage in the 11:06 a.m. accident is estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
In Celina Municipal Court
Ariel Martinez, 40, 2800 Siegrist-Jutte Road, Fort Recovery, was fined $235 for no operator’s license and failure to maintain an assured, clear distance ahead.
Julio Gonzalez Perez, 25, Portland, pleaded no contest to OVI, driving without a license and a taillight violation. He was sentenced to three days in jail, may do three days of counseling in lieu of jail and was charged a $375 fine and costs.
In Wells Superior Court
Brittany Joanna Hunter, 29, Geneva, violated probation by failing to report to her probation officer as directed and failing to comply with the counseling requirement of her sentence.
She was ordered to serve 120 days in the Wells County Jail and was originally sentenced May 15 on charges of theft and interfering with medical services, both Class A misdemeanors.
Kyrstin P. Stults, 23, Portland, violated probation by failing to pay court costs, restitution, fine and fees totaling $4,323.58. Her probation was extended another six months.
Stults was sentenced Nov. 22, 2016, on charges of criminal trespass and theft, both Class A misdemeanors, and criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.
Ashley L. Nichols, 29, Portland, violated probation by failing to report a change of address to her probation officer, testing positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine during random drug tests on Oct. 10 and Oct. 12 and failing to truthfully answer all questions asked by her probation officer.
She was ordered to serve 120 days in the Wells County Jail.
Nichols was originally sentenced July 27 on one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class A misdemeanor.
