MUNCIE — The Patriots fell behind with a lackluster second quarter.

Eight of their 24 turnovers came during the period.

Early in the third quarter, they trailed by 13 points before trimming the deficit to just one possession.

Victor Young and the Bearcats didn’t allow them to get any closer.

Young scored the Bearcats’ final 11 points of the third quarter, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, helping the Muncie Central Bearcats past the Jay County High School boys basketball team 64-55 Saturday at Muncie Southside Middle School.

“He went on a roll there in that quarter,” said JCHS coach Chris Krieg, whose team dips to 4-5 on the year and meets Adams Central on Jan. 6 in Monroe. “Good basketball players can do that. We know he’s a phenomenal athlete. To be honest I felt like we did a pretty good job defensively on him. We contested the shots. That’s all you can do. He was just in one of those zones.”

Jay County had just gone on a 10-0 run, which included three points each from Wyatt Geesaman and Holton Hill as well as layups from Michael Schlechty and Cole Stigleman. The Patriots cut the deficit from 35-22 to 35-32 ahead of a pair of Young free throws with 2:17 left in the third quarter.

On the next trip down the court, Young hit a jumper from the right side, and after a Patriot turnover he made a pair of free throws as Muncie Central (2-6) opened a 41-32 advantage.

Geesaman added another bucket — all of his 12 points came after halftime — and Young answered with a jump shot from the top of the key. Hill scored on an assist from Max Moser in the waning seconds, but Young swished a 3-pointer from the right wing as the buzzer sounded.

“Victor came through and played a man’s game at that time,” said first-year coach Chandler Thompson, whose Bearcat squad is playing its home games at Southside Middle School because Muncie Fieldhouse sustained damage from the Nov. 5 tornadoes that rocked Delaware and Jay counties.

“He wanted the ball,” Thompson added.

Demarius Pegues and Young shared the game high of 18 points.

Young’s 3-pointer gave the Bearcats a 46-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Jay County got as close as six points in the fourth quarter, the last of which was at 56-50 after Geesaman put back a missed Schlechty 3-pointer with less than 90 seconds to play.

Jay County was forced to foul from then on — the Patriots and Bearcats combined for 47 fouls on the night — and Muncie Central scored its last eight points on free throws. The Bearcats were 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and 22-of-28 (78.6 percent) for the game.

Even though Young got hot in the third quarter and the Bearcats shooting well from the foul line in the fourth, it was the 24 turnovers which stood out the most to Krieg.

“It wasn’t them that caused us turnovers, it was our poor decision-making on trying to pass the ball where we can’t pass it,” he said. “Their pressure didn’t affect us. We got in the half court, we reversed the basketball a couple times and we got a layup. But we were trying to play a little too fast and force a ball we can’t get in there.

“When you’re going against teams that are more athletic and more skilled than you, you have to have great fundamentals. And I’ll be honest our fundamentals were not very good tonight.”

Stigleman finished with a dozen points to share the team-high in scoring with Geesaman, who led the squad with seven rebounds. Ryan Schlechty chipped in nine points, and Hill tallied seven points.

Christian Wells and AJ Wright had 13 and 10 points respectively to give the Bearcats four players in double figures.

Jay County shot poorly from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and later in a 51-46 overtime loss.

The Patriots (6-3) were 75 percent from the foul line in the first three quarters as it led 32-29. But a 13-10 edge by the Bearcats in the fourth quarter forced overtime, and the hosts pulled away in the extra period.

Jay County made just five of its 13 free throws after the third quarter, while Muncie Central was 13-of-14 in the same span.

Matt Franks led Jay County with 19 points, all but six of which came in the second half. Noah Arbuckle scored 13 points to join him in double figures and Gabe Link contributed eight points. Landon Grimes and Xavier Ninde added three points apiece.
