There's a need for some changes

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I would like to comment on Adam Gray’s fine, well-written, fact-filled, heartfelt letter to the editor concerning the Jay County High School coaching staffs, football in particular.

I am in complete accordance with Gray’s attempt to canonize JCHS football coach Tim Millspaugh as a teacher. I’m convinced there should be a special place in heaven for teachers who evoke the desire to learn.

I do, however, have issues with some of the facts Gray presented.

First, game film study, game planning, motivating weight room workouts, keeping an eye for the future is called the job. It goes with the territory, the right to be called coach.

The 19-22 record indicates we have not beaten another Class 4A school since the 2013 first-round sectional win over Marion. That is outrageous.

It also indicates we have lost nine times in the last four years to teams less than half our size. That’s outrageous, too.

Of the six games that we won in 2016, only one of those teams had a winning record. That too, is outrageous.

Gray says concerned citizens should find a way to help. He’s right.

My way is to awaken someone in the community to the fact some changes must be made, however unpopular they may be.

Respectfully,

Larry Chittum

Benefit upcoming

To the editor:

The second annual benefit In Memory of Mandy (Theurer) will be held Feb. 17 at Jay Community Center.

Mandy was a life-long resident of Jay County, killed in a single-car accident in February 2015 at the age of 26.

All money raised from this event will be turned back into the community through scholarships and presentations to organizations that help others. To date, we have been able to give back more than $12,500 because of the success of last year’s benefit.

A homemade chicken and noodle dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. with dine in and carry out available. Tickets are available at Upperkut Salon and Spa.

An auction of donated items from individuals and businesses will be held beginning at 7 p.m. with auctioneering services provided by Loy’s Auctioneering.

There will also be a bounce house provided by Tony Lennartz for the children to enjoy.

So, please plan to join us Feb. 17 for a night of great food, auction fun and a time remembering a special young lady who is missed by many.
