Officer arrested

A Portland Police Officer was arrested in Pennville early Saturday morning.

Andrew R. Swoveland, 31, was arrested by Pennville Police Department on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor, and public intoxication and disorderly conduct, both Class C misdemeanors.

He was booked at 2:12 a.m. Saturday into Jay County Jail. Portland Police Chief Nathan Springer said Swoveland is suspended from the department pending the outcome of an internal investigation.



OWI accident

A Portland woman was involved in an accident and was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated Friday night.

Heather M. Groh, 22, 915 W. Race St., was driving a 2013 Buick Verano west on Race Street when she struck a 1998 Ford Expedition parked outside the home of Lori and Eric Wendel, 318 E. Race St.

Groh is preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.

Damage in the 10:08 p.m. accident was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.



Hit and run

A car driven by a Portland teen was damaged in a hit a run by a Portage woman Friday evening.

Nathaniel R. Miller, 16, 820 W. High St., told Portland Police Department that he was driving a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix north on Wayne Street, between Walnut and High Streets, when he slowed down because of traffic and the Grand Prix was struck from behind by a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country.

According to Miller, the driver of the Chrysler, Cynthia S. Hicks, 57, 7 Locust Road, Portage, told him there was no damage to the Grand Prix and drove away. Miller took a photo of her license plate with his cell phone, and using it police were able to identify Hicks’ van.

The Grand Prix is registered to Sherie and Joshua Miller, same address as driver. Damage in the 4:56 p.m. accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.



Burglary

A rural Redkey home was burglarized sometime last week, according to a Jay County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

Jerry R. Stephens, 7273 W. 800 South, reported to police today that his home had been broken into while he was out of town, after his son found a broken window.

A 50-inch flat-screen television was taken from the home, and police are investigating whether additional items were stolen.



Fence damaged

A Portland woman damaged a fence with a vehicle Sunday evening.

Peggy J. Byrley, 45, 100 Moody Ave., Apartment B, was driving a 1992 Dodge Dakota south in an alleyway near the intersection of Moody Avenue and Ben Hawkins Street, when she drove the Dakota into a fence at 1010 N. Ben Hawkins St.

Byrley told Portland Police Department that she was mad at her boyfriend and struck the fence. The results of a blood alcohol test are pending.

Damage in the 5:25 p.m. accident was estimated under $1,000.



Utility pole struck

A Hartford City woman was involved in a one-vehicle accident Saturday evening east of Portland.

Elyse K. Edsall, 29, 1711 S. Poplar St., told Jay County Sheriff’s Office that she was driving her 2012 Nissan Versa north on county road 300 East, north of the intersection with Indiana 26, when a deer jumped out in front of the Versa. Edsall swerved to try and avoid striking the deer, and the Versa went off the east side of the road and struck a utility pole.

Edsall took a preliminary breath test and was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor. Damage in the 5:10 p.m. accident was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.



Slide off

A rural Dunkirk teen was involved in a one-vehicle accident Friday morning south of Dunkirk.

Katelyn B. Hamilton, 16, 12488 W. 600 South, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox east on county road 600 South, when icy road conditions caused the vehicle to slide off the south side of the road. The Equinox struck a phone box and two trees at 12019 W. 600 South.

The Equinox is registered to Bradley A. Krieg, 12488 W. 600 South, Dunkirk. Damage in the 7:54 a.m. accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.



Deer struck

A rural Portland man struck a deer with his vehicle Friday morning near Salamonia.

Michael R. Link, 50, 6581 S. 600 East, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office that he was driving his 2005 Chevrolet Silverado north on county road 600 East, north of the intersection with county road 500 South, when a deer entered the roadway and was struck by his Silverado.

Damage in the 5:55 a.m. accident was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
