As Fort Recovery School Board made preparations for 2017 and beyond, it also got some good news about 2016 test scores.

Elementary school principal Tracy Hein-Evers reported to the board at its meeting Tuesday that local third graders saw significant improvement in their language arts test scores.

The board also elected new leaders for 2017 and approved the 2017-18 school calendar.

Hein-Evers told board members Ginny Fortkamp, Aaron Guggenbiller, Jose Faller, Mitch Ervin and Mike Grube that 58 percent of students rated as proficient on Ohio’s American Institute of Research (AIR) language arts test that was administered in November. That’s 21 percentage points above the state average and a 25-percentage-point improvement over 2015.

The tests rank students as advanced, accelerated, proficient, basic or limited in their skills. Fort Recovery saw its percentage of advanced students increase to 16 percent from just 1 percent a year ago.

Breaking down the results further showed the percentage of Fort Recovery third graders who were proficient on the informational text portion of the test increased to 72 percent from 62 percent and those who were proficient on the literary text portion of the test went up to 76 percent from 65 percent.

“That’s the numbers we like to see,” said Grube, noting the improvement. “You should be very proud.”

The 2017-18 school calendar, which is essentially the same as that for the current year, calls for the first student day on Aug. 23. Winter break will be from Dec. 22 through Jan. 2, and students will have March 29 and 30 and April 2 off surrounding the Easter holiday. The last day of school is slated for May 24, with graduation on May 20.

Fortkamp was elected as board president by a 3-2 vote over Ervin, with Faller, Guggenbiller and Fortkamp voting in favor of her election. Guggenbiller was then elected vice president, also by a 3-2 vote with the same trio voting in his favor.

Faller and Ervin served as president and vice president respectively in 2016.

Board members also set a bond of $50,000 for the board president and established a board of education service fund not to exceed $5,000.

In other business, the board:

•Scheduled its regular meetings for 2017 for 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month with the exception of the February meeting, which will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13.

•Appointed Guggenbiller as its legislative liaison to the Ohio School Board Association with Ervin as the alternate. Also appointed Grube as its student achievement liaison.

•Named treasurer Lori Koch as its representative to the Mercer/Auglaize Benefit Trust.

•Accepted more than $3,400 in donations, including $1,192.65 from Fort Recovery Community Foundation for high school materials and supplies.

•Approved Amber Swander to work as a substitute teacher on an as-needed basis.

•Received certificates of thanks from Firks as part of board of education recognition month. Board members will also be honored at the Jan. 20 boys basketball game against Versailles.
