Catherine Dunn and Abby Wendel spent three years as teammates.
The duo helped the Patriot girls basketball team win a conference championship in 2015.
They were on the same court again Friday, but this time as opponents.
Dunn, a 2015 Jay County High School graduate, and Wendel, a 2016 grad, met on the hardwood in a River States Conference tilt. Wendel and the University of Rio Grande Red Storm defeated Dunn and her Brescia University Bearcats, 78-68, in Rio Grande, Ohio.
Dunn started for the Bearcats (2-17, 0-6 RSC), going 3-for-6 from the field and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line to finish with a team-high 14 points. She also had one rebound and an assist in nearly 30 minutes.
Wendel came off the bench to go 4-of-6 and made one free throw to total nine points. She also had two rebounds and on assist for the Red Storm (12-6, 4-2 RSC).
Dunn was first on the team in rebounds and third on the team in scoring on Saturday as the Bearcats fell to West Virginia Tech, 81-58. She hauled in seven rebounds and tallied 10 points. She also dished four assists and had four steals.
Wendel played a reserve role in the Red Storm’s 90-63 victory Saturday over IU-Southeast. She recorded six points, three rebounds and three assists.

Jay County – 2016
Earned a pair of individual victories and assisted on winning relays in helping the Ball State University women’s swim team defeat both IUPUI and Xavier on Friday.
Vormohr earned a win in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.07 seconds, and also finished fifth in the 50 freestyle in 24.59. She kicked off the meet by swimming the backstroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay with Amanda Kedzierski, Andrea Richter and Peighton Gilbert. Vormohr had a split of 27.38 seconds, and the team finished in 1:46.16.
Bader claimed her victory in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:11.77. She was also third in the 100 butterfly (58.02), and swam the third leg of the 400 freestyle relay in 54.32 as she, Jessica Extine, Lauren Elston and Richter placed third.
Katy Smeltzer
Jay County – 2015
Was part of a winning relay team for the University of the Cumberlands women’s swim team on Saturday in a meet at South Georgia State College.
Smeltzer swam the second leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay with Brittany Litke, Grace Moffat and Christina Klouda. Smeltzer had a split of 26.36 seconds, as the quartet won in 1:44.56.
The former JCHS Patriot also helped the 200 medley relay finish third in 2:03.8. Individually, she finished fourth in the 50 freestyle (26.58) and fifth in the 50 butterfly (29.96).
Elijah Kahlig
Fort Recovery – 2014
Narrowly missed reaching double figures in scoring for the University of Findlay men’s basketball team on Friday in a 70-64 victory over Wayne State.
Kahlig was 3-of-9 from the floor, including 2-for-8 from long range, and split a pair of free throws to finish with nine points. He was second on the team with six rebounds, while also adding one assist.
The junior tallied seven points, four steals, one rebound and one assist as the Oilers (12-3, 6-2 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) knocked off NCAA Division II No. 6 Saginaw Valley State 88-78 on Jan. 5.
Wade Gelhaus
Fort Recovery – 2013
Made the most of his reserve role for the Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team Saturday in an 87-85 loss to Walsh.
The senior was 3-for-4 from the field and made all five of his free throws to finish with 11 points. He also grabbed three rebounds and had two assists for the NCAA Division II No. 6 Cardinals (11-3, 4-3 GLIAC).
In a matchup with former teammate Elijah Kahlig and the Findlay Oilers on Jan. 5, Gelhaus finished with 11 points, three rebounds and two assists.
Kegan Comer
Jay County – 2013
Reached double figures for the University of Saint Francis men’s basketball team on Tuesday in its 83-79 loss to Huntington University.
Comer was 4-for-10 from the field and made both of his free throws to finish with 11 points. He grabbed three rebounds, dished one assist and had a steal for the NAIA Division II No. 3 Cougars (15-4, 42 Crossroads League).
The former Patriot tallied four points, three rebounds, two blocks and an assist in the Cougars’ 73-51 victory Friday over Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Scott Schwieterman
Jay County – 2013
Was third in scoring for the Indiana Tech men’s basketball team Wednesday as it knocked off another ranked opponent, No. 8 Davenport, 85-66.
Schwieterman was 5-for-9 from the field and made four of his five free throws to finish with 15 points. He also tied for second on the team in rebounding, earning five rebounds, while dishing two assists, notching one steal and recording a block.
He totaled two points and shared the team lead of four rebounds as the Warriors (14-5, 9-2 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference) defeated No. 25 Northwestern Ohio, 87-85.
Cindy In’t Groen
South Adams – 2016
Made the only shot she took for the Huntington University women’s basketball team Wednesday in an 88-59 loss to University of Saint Francis.
The freshman tallied two points in three minutes of playing time.
She also logged two minutes as the Foresters (9-9, 3-4 Crossroads League) defeated Spring Arbor on Saturday, 82.67. She did not record any other stats.
