Football team is on the right track

Letters to the editor

To the editor:

As a former resident of Jay County, and an alumnus of Jay County High School, I felt the need to respond to the outrageous letter to the editor that was in the paper targeting JCHS athletic coaches, but mostly the Jay County football program.

While I have moved on from the walls of JCHS, I still keep an eye toward the athletic programs, and want to see them succeed.

JCHS football coach Tim Millspaugh has a record of 19-22 over the 4 years he has lead the program. His first year saw the Patriots go 7-4, their best mark since the sectional championship year of 2007. Since then the Patriots have gone 2-8, 4-6 and 6-4. There is obvious progression and growth happening within the Patriot football program.

As a coach, there are not many harder workers you will find compared to Tim Millspaugh. He puts countless hours into film study and game-planning for upcoming games. In the off-season, he is a great leader and motivator for his players in the weight room. Coach Millspaugh is a tireless worker in the offseason as well, working to see what can be improved upon or what schemes need to be tweaked for the upcoming personnel.

The role of a high school coach is difficult. The amount of hours that we, as coaches, put into our sport is disproportionate to our compensation. For a high school coach to truly be successful and have an impact, they must also have a passion for developing young people. In that respect, Tim Millspaugh is second to none.

I was fortunate enough to have Tim as a teacher in economics class. His passion for the subject was contagious, and as a class our passion and excitement for the subject that was a relative unknown to us at the beginning of the semester.

As stated earlier, coach Millspaugh’s overall record at JCHS is 19-22, a mark he would tell you he is not satisfied with. However, there has been significant growth and a trend in a positive direction.

In the 2014 season, where the Patriots finished 2-8, the Patriots scored 15.1 points per game, and gave up 38.5 points per game, a margin of negative-23.4 points per game. This past season, the Patriots finished with a 6-4 mark. The Patriots scored 27.1 points per game (a 12-point improvement from the 2014 season), and gave up 23.5 points per game (a 15-point improvement from the 2014 season). The Patriots average margin was +3.6, an improvement of 27 points from that 2014 season.

If community members feel compelled to share their concern about the football program, there are many ways to help. Coach a flag or pee-wee football team, help out at the middle school or see if there’s another way you can help.

Sitting back and complaining does nothing at this point. If you think there’s a problem, find an outlet to help.

I’ll be doing my part by supporting the JCHS athletic department whenever I have the opportunity.

Sincerely,

Adam Gray
