Rollover
A rural Portland woman was listed in serious condition this morning at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne after she was injured Saturday evening when her car rolled over north of Portland.
Kandi S. Smith, 39. 714 W. 400 North, was driving a 2000 Ford Taurus west on county road 400 North, east of the intersection with county road 125 West, when she lost control of the car, causing it to slide to the south side of the road. According to Jay County Sheriff’s Office, when the Taurus went into a ditch alongside the road, it flipped an unknown number of times. Smith wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, and was thrown from the vechile.
Smith was transported to Jay County Hospital with head injuries and then flown by helicopter to Lutheran Hospital.
She was charged for driving while suspended with a prior infraction violation, a Class A misdemeanor.
The Taurus was registered to Luke J. Bailey, same address as driver.
Damage in the 7:10 p.m. accident was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
One injured
A Carmel woman was injured early Monday morning in an accident on Indiana 27 north of Portland.
Gabriela E. Brito, 23, 519 Chauncy St., told Jay County Sheriff’s Office she was driving south on Indiana 27, north of the intersection wth county road 500 North, when she saw a semi truck stopped ahead of her 2005 Saturn Ion. Brito tried to brake and lost control of the Ion because of icy road conditions. The Saturn crossed the center line and struck a guardrail, then crossed back over and struck the rail on the west side of the road.
Brito suffered minor cuts to her face.
Damage in the 1:35 a.m. accident was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
Left of center
A Brampton, Ontario, man and a Farmland man were involved in a vehicle accident west of Portland early Monday morning.
Bhupinder S. Dosanjh, 33, 18 Bell Haven Crescent, Brampton, Ontario, was driving a 2012 Freightliner Columbia semi southwest on Indiana 67, northeast of the intersection with county road 200 West, when it crossed the center line and sideswiped a northbound 2006 Ford F350.
Bruce W. Tiller, 48, 479 N. 1000 West, Farmland, was driving the F350.
The semi is registered to Shabad Transport, 108 Education Road, Brampton, Ontario.
Damage in the 1:25 a.m. accident was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Backing accident
A Redkey man was involved in a vehicle accident Sunday afternoon east of Redkey.
Adam W. Fugiett, 41, 8032 E. 600 South, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was backing his 2014 Chevrolet Silverado out of his driveway and failed to see a 2006 Chevrolet Impala parked behind his Silverado. Fugiett backed into the Impala with the Silverado, causing damage to the front driver side.
The Impala is registered to Christina Daniels, 404 W. Walnut St., Portland.
Damage in the 2:55 p.m. accident was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Deer struck
A Hartford City man struck a deer with his vehicle Friday evening near Dunkirk.
Shannon D. Kaufman, 46, 7603 E. 100 North, told Jay County Sheriff’s Office he was driving his 2012 Jeep north on Indiana 167, north of the intersection with county road 150 South, when a deer walked into the roadway. He was unable to avoid striking it with his Jeep.
Damage in the 6:33 p.m. was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Office closed
Portland’s water office will be closed from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday.
