WALK Against Cancer is June 24

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

In the next few weeks, Jay County newspaper subscribers will find 2017 WALK Against Cancer advertisements in their newspaper.

It is our hope that the community will join us Saturday, June 24, at Jay County High School to raise money for Jay County Cancer Society. The cancer society provides financial assistance to cancer patients in Jay County for medical expenses, travel, prescriptions, testing, etc.

The survivor dinner will be at 5:30 p.m. in the JCHS commons (reservations required by today). The vendor area and activities for the family will be available from 6 to 9 p.m., opening ceremonies with balloon launch will be at at 8:30 p.m., and the luminary ceremony will be 9:30 p.m. Donated items will be raffled off at 8:30 p.m. Raffle tickets will be available before and the night of the WALK. Also, new to the 2017 WALK is a silent auction right after the survival dinner.

The evening event will be held outside at the JCHS football stadium along with the silent auction. Flyers for the event are available at Jay County Public Library, Jay County Hospital and many local businesses. The flyer has the times of all the events and a pledge sheet on the back. Any walker who collects more than $100 will receive a free WALK T-shirt while supplies last.

Thank you to our 2017 platinum sponsors: First Bank of Berne, Mayor Geesaman Golf Outing, Inman U Loc Storage, Memorial of Dr. Charles Miller Jr., Fellow Baptist Church, Schmit Chiropractic, DELTS, Church of the Brethren, Jay County Hospital and Mandy’s Blessings.

Also, thank you to our gold sponsors: Alexander Financial Group of Raymond James, Cincinnatus League, Williamson Spencer & Penrod Funeral Homes, Ali and Doug Inman in memory of Susie Inman, Knights of Columbus, Arch Bridge Kroozers Inc., New Holiness Beginnings, Blacksmiths Union Local 1620, Family Worship Center of Portland, Joe Louks Family, Wholesale Carpet Outlet, Coca-Cola, The Rosary Society, Masters Insurance, Belmont Graphic, First Merchants Bank and Jeff and Tammy Bulmahn.

How can you help?

There are many ways; collect money from your friends, co-workers, family, neighbors, etc., as pledges or for luminaries and keep track on the pledge sheet, then bring the pledge sheet and money to the WALK. Ask your employer to make a donation on your behalf. Help spread the word by sharing this information with as many people as possible. Display the flyer in your place of business. Have a charity fundraiser at your place of employment, church or philanthropic group and donate the funds raised to the WALK Against Cancer. The ways to help are endless and the difference every dollar makes is priceless.

Remember that 100 percent of the money donated to Jay County Cancer Society remains in Jay County helping our neighbors and friends with their uninsured cancer-related expenses.

If you would like to volunteer at the WALK or need additional information, please contact us at (260) 726-8110 and leave a message.

Donations are accepted the night of the WALK or anytime at P.O. Box 614, Portland, Indiana, 47371.

We look forward to seeing you on the evening of June 24, as we remember those lost, honor those who are suffering and celebrate with those who have won the fight against cancer.

Thank you,

Angela Twigg and Tisha Gierhart
