Get screened

To the editor:

As a leader of the Jay County Hospital Ostomy Support Group, I am writing in support of March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosis among men and women combined in the United States. There is currently no cure, but it’s 90 percent treatable if caught early with a screening. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be more than 135,000 new cases and more than 50,000 deaths this year.

I am a leader with a local affiliated support group of United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA). Sometimes colorectal cancer is treated with surgery, including colostomy or ileostomy surgery that may be temporary or permanent.

I’d like the community to know that if they have had, or need to have life-saving ostomy surgery because of colorectal cancer or any other reason, education and peer-support is available. Ostomy surgery creates an opening (stoma) in the abdomen that allows for the removal of bodily waste into an external pouch.

UOAA works toward a society where people with ostomies and continent diversions are accepted as the healthy and active individuals they are.

Ostomy patients of all ages and their families, friends and caregivers are welcome at meetings of the Jay County Hospital Ostomy Support Group. Please join us at Jay County Hospital in conference room B on the second Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. You may contact Heather Morehous at (260) 726-2890 with any questions. There will not be meetings in April, May and June of this year. The next meeting will be July 13.

Also, the hospital foundation is providing free colorectal cancer screening kits during the month of March. You may pick up a screening kit at the hospital information desk or at your healthcare provider’s office.

Talk to your doctor to see if you are due for a colorectal cancer screening. To find out more information on living with an ostomy, contact United Ostomy Associations of America at http://www.ostomy.org or (800) 826-0826.

Sincerely,

Heather Morehous
