Music is returning to the featured slot for the Jay County Fair.

Jay County Fair Board on Thursday announced that it has signed country music’s Jerrod Niemann to headline the fair with a concert Thursday, July 13. Trent Harmon, the winner of the final season of “American Idol” last year, will be his opening act.

Niemann marks a return to music after comedian Jeff Foxworthy took the grandstand stage on Thursday night of the 2016 fair. It’s also an effort to draw in youth after having Trace Adkins and Foxworthy in back-to-back years.

“He appeals to a little bit younger crowd,” said fair board president Rob Weaver. “And we wanted to attract the younger concertgoers.

“We try to mix it up so that over a five-, 10-year period we’re bringing in a variety of acts that people will enjoy.”

Niemann has had a pair of songs — “Lover, Lover” in 2010 and “Drink to that All Night” in 2013 — reach the No. 1 spot on “Billboard” magazine’s U.S. country airplay charts. His 2010 album “Judge Jerrod & the Hung Jury” also climbed to No. 1 on the U.S. “Billboard” country charts.

Originally from Liberal, Kansas, the 37-year-old Niemann self-released his first album in 1999 and put out his first major-label album in 2010 for Brad Paisley’s Arista Nashville. He has also co-written with Garth Brooks and Lee Brice, and toured with Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley and Paisley.

Harmon, originally from Armory, Mississippi, won last year’s final season of “American Idol” to earn himself a contract with Big Machine Records. His first album is still in process, but the two singles he’s released — “Falling” and “There’s a Girl” — have both made it into the Billboard U.S. Country top 30.

Tickets will be $29 for the grandstand, $39 for the track and $50 for the pit. They will be available at http://www.jaycountyfair.com.

There will also be a musical act at the grandstand on Wednesday, July 12, with Hotel California taking the stage.

“They kind of tout themselves as the original Eagles tribute band,” said Weaver. “We feel really good that the people are going to enjoy the show.”

Most of the rest of the schedule will remain the same as it was in 2016, with the exception being that the midway will return to opening on Monday evening, July 10. Because of a scheduling conflict, Maple Leaf Amusements was unable to open the midway until Tuesday last year.

“Their schedule even presents the possibility of maybe even opening on the weekend before maybe next year,” said Weaver, adding that he expects the company will have a few new rides this summer. “They have more time now between their previous venue and Jay County. So they’re going to be able to open up easily on Monday night.”

Rides will open at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, for McDonald’s Kids Day and then at 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. The midway will wrap up with a ride-a-thon from noon to closing on Saturday, July 15.

The rest of the grandstand entertainment schedule remains intact with hog wrestling on Monday, July 10; 3 Bar J Rodeo back for a second year on Tuesday, July 11; and open demolition derbies on Friday and Saturday, July 14 and 15. Both derbies were open for the first time last year, and Weaver said that format was well received.
