Decisions are all about Portland

Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

In regard to closing schools, this is only my opinion but I’m sure others agree with me — Portland never did care about Redkey, Dunkirk or Pennville.

They were always low on the totem pole and made to feel inferior. If you are so in need to cut costs, why not cut the superintendent and administrators’ salaries. Start with them.

Pennville is one of the better schools in Jay County. I don’t live close to there, so that’s not the reason I say this. Dunkirk and Redkey also have nice elementary schools. If Pennville is low on students, why not bus Portland kids there and Dunkirk and Redkey. Why do they have to sacrifice everything?

I don’t have any kids in school anymore, but if I did I would be upset too. It’s all about Portland and upgrading Portland.

What’s going to happen if parents take their kids elsewhere?

I had kids in Redkey, Dunkirk and Portland schools. If you close schools in these small towns then the towns are going to fold, but so what? “Portland is the important one.” Only think about Portland.

If these towns fold, do you think the people are going to come to Portland to shop. I doubt that. Muncie is not that far away.

Stephen Betts and other parents are right, if you close Pennville, you better believe Dunkirk and Redkey are not far behind. But I think you have a one-track mind and refuse to look further into the situation and it’s a sad situation.
