BERNE — South Adams will get to have a little more work done than originally expected.

Thanks to bids coming in below estimates, South Adams School Board on Tuesday expanded the scope of the high school renovation project that will be completed this summer.

Superintendent Scott Litwiller reported to the board that lower-than-expected bids resulted in about $33,000 in savings. That allowed the board to include additional items in the project, approving Litwiller's recommended renovation of the classroom at the southeast corner of the media center ($22,000) as well as the hallway that extends south from the media center ($10,000).

The original scope $1.7-million project, which is being handled by Allen County Builders through a design-build process with Performance Services, included moving the high school office to the northeast entrance to create a secure entrance, renovating nine classrooms, adding a new intercom system that will be tied into the elementary/middle school building and removing a mechanical closet from a classroom.

Meetings about the project are scheduled for this week, with construction to begin immediately following the last day of school May 19.

“We’re excited about that,” said director of buildings and maintenance Dave Vorhees.

The project, which is being funded via money saved through bond refinancing, is slated to be substantially complete by Aug. 7 in order to be ready to start the 2017-18 school year.

Board members Arlene Amstutz, John Mann, Julie Mansfield and John Buckingham, absent Landon Patterson, Mitch Sprunger and Amy Orr, also gave Litwiller permission to determine how best to dispose of equipment removed from the area being renovated.

It tabled any action on future projects, which have been a topic of discussion at the last two meetings, until a work session scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday.
